At one point in time, the two-time Oscar-winning director (Guillermo del Toro) was set to be in full control of the fate of the long-awaited Justice League Dark film. Unfortunately, somewhere along the way del Toro found himself no longer captain of the project at hand, with thousands of ideas forever lost at sea - until now.

The director recently revealed his previous plans and storylines for what he envisioned for Justice League Dark. Justice League Dark as a concept has been floating around Warner Brothers for years now, with multiple creatives signing on and simultaneously stepping down from the project.

Back when Del Toro was at the helm of the film, he dreamt and planned on having a proper big-screen premiere for Justice League Dark. With J.J. Abrams now in the driver’s seat of the movie, Justice League Dark will be exclusively available through streaming on HBO Max. With highly anticipated, major block-blusters such as Justice League Dark are the backbone of the movie theater experience. These are films meant to be viewed collectively, paying homage to the indulgence of watching at the theater.

Del Toro was signed on to create a Hulk Tv series for Marvel in the past, but it also never came to fruition. When the filmmaker did share his ideas for the film, he really zeroed in on which specific characters that he felt were crucial for this line-up of superheroes.

In an interview with Josh Horowitz, Del Toro stated, “I took a little bit of the opening of the Alan Moore Constantine. And I took the dynamics between Abby Arcane and Swamp Thing, and I took the sort of revelatory moments when Deadman gets into a body, how he would experience the consciousness of that being. And one of my all time’s favorites is the demon Etrigan. I love that character. Zatanna is really, for me, another character that is really effortlessly powerful and interesting. I’m trying to mix that with Klarion the Witch Boy. I was always a DC guy.”

It’s clear from Del Toro's ideas that Justice League Dark is very dear to him, close to his chest with passion flowing over his words. He established a true vision of how he wanted to bring this film to life. It’s bittersweet for many fans to hear what could have been of Guillermo del Toro’s Justice League Dark. Hopefully Del Toro will officially make his mark in the Marvel or DC universes sooner rather than later.
