While it is currently believed that Guild Wars 2 is targeting a June 26th release date, an earnings call curated by GameStop CFO Robert Lloyd suggests that to no longer be the case. Developer ArenaNet has been holding fast to their motto of “when it’s ready it will be out,” but still early release dates have been pegged for the highly anticipated MMO.
Unfortunately, as Lloyd revealed, the title may have slipped out of its current target quarter and is now looking to some time after July for release. Typically game retailers have been the be all and the end all as far as release dates are concerned — just look at Black Ops 2 — but ArenaNet likes to play their cards close to the chest.
With Diablo 3 releasing to some substantial fanfare, despite being broken during the first few days, perhaps ArenaNet wants to separate themselves from the more engrossing experiences as best they can. However, if they wait too long they could end up releasing alongside the big fall and Holiday titles like Assassin’s Creed 3 and Halo 4.
The launch of The Old Republic, which took place just days before Christmas, was thought to be a kiss of death for that hotly anticipated MMO, but fan enthusiasm won out in the end. That, however, was considered to be one of the last in a dying breed of premium MMOs, a category that may or may not include Guild Wars 2. It’s going to be this game that determines the future landscape for the genre — whether or not free-to-play is the way to go.
When ArenaNet decides to announce a release date for Guild Wars 2, which features a revamped PvP element and new races, rest assured that Game Rant will be there to cover it all.
When would you like to see Guild Wars 2 release? Should ArenaNet get the MMO out before the Holiday onslaught of games hits?
Guild Wars 2 is still targeting a June 26, 2012 release date for the PC.
