Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is the final entry for this iteration of the mighty team. The first movie was about forming the team while the second was about Peter finding his family via his space father. The first one is also about Peter, more or less, but the focus this time completely shifts to Rocket.

It’s one of the best things about the movie which closes the trilogy off right. That doesn’t mean Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 doesn’t leave questions on the table, because it does. Where will this MCU property go next?

There will be spoilers in this breakdown.

6 How Will Peter Return?

Peter in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

There are a lot of misleading death scenes in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Peter, in particular, almost died as he did in the first movie. In the first movie, he launches himself into space and starts to freeze as he tries to save Gamora by giving her his helmet. The same thing happens to Peter in this movie except he does it to buy time to save some kids. Also, the scene is a lot more graphic with Peter taking on a lot of water and becoming bloated.

Fortunately, he is rescued by Adam Warlock in a touching scene of redemption for the villain. He departs from his friends after this and heads to Earth to find that his grandpa is still alive. The movie teases that Star-Lord will return but it doesn’t elaborate on how. Will he get his own solo trilogy or join someone else’s team like The Avengers on Earth?

5 Will Rocket Take Over The Guardian’s Franchise?

Rocket in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Who will lead the Guardians of the Galaxy in Peter’s absence? The movie answers that pretty quickly with a scene involving Rocket leading Adam Warlock, Cosmo, and several others into battle. Rocket is the new leader and he couldn’t be happier about it. Who the true leader was kept coming up in every movie, which is why this seems most appropriate in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

He is a good replacement but will Rocket be seen again in the MCU? Will he and the other Guardians of the Galaxy make cameos in other space-based movie projects, or will the legendary Guardians of the Galaxy continue with Rocket as the lead in full movies? The lack of James Gunn at the head is nerve-wracking but something good could still come out of another movie, especially with Rocket as the leader.

4 Will Nebula, Drax, And Mantis Return?

Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

What about the other Guardians of the Galaxy left hanging at the end of the movie? It seems less likely that Drax, Nebula, and Mantis will get their own movie projects. Drax and Nebula stay behind at the base so that they can both take care of the influx of children they received from the High Evolutionary’s research facility. Mantis, instead, runs away with her new pet creatures to discover the galaxy on her own.

While it seems unlikely that any of them will get a movie project, Disney could green-light a spinoff show for their streaming service. If The Falcon and the Winter Soldier can get made then so can a show about Mantis. It might take a while because the MCU slate is pretty filled up right now but there is still hope to see these three beloved characters again in some capacity.

3 Will There Be A Ravagers Movie With Gamora?

Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Stakar’s team of Ravagers, played by Sylvester Stallone, shows up in the second movie. There are a lot of other stars involved in this team like Miley Cyrus as Mainframe. Now, in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it is revealed that Gamora joined Stakar and the other Ravagers. Even though she grows a bond with the Guardians of the Galaxy again, she still returns to Stakar and his Ravagers.

Because two movies have already built up this other team, it seems unlikely that Disney would just abandon this concept. A Ravagers show or movie has a high probability of happening at some point. What remains a mystery is if Gamora will return or if she will be written off. Maybe Gamora will even have a solo project instead.

2 Counter-Earth Questions

High Evolutionary in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

There are a lot of things that don’t make sense about the High Evolutionary’s Counter-Earth creation. It is filled with anthropomorphic animals that anime fans of shows like Beastars would absolutely love. They look like they have jobs and live in a “normal” society. Why does this Counter-Earth look like it takes place in the 1960s or 70s of Earth though?

Also, why did he program these animals with their own language instead of English? Finally, was the High Evolutionary successful in blowing that planet up, or did some survive the destruction of Counter-Earth? If another Guardians of the Galaxy movie gets made with Rocket as the leader, it would be interesting to see him come across more animal folks that the High Evolutionary worked on.

1 “I Love You Guys.”

Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

“I am Groot” is Groot’s catchphrase throughout the MCU. This is even true in his short series on Disney+, I Am Groot. That’s because he speaks a dead language that no one can translate. The most he deviates from these three words is “We are Groot” toward the end of the first movie. In an odd turn, Groot says “I love you guys” at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Was Groot playing a fast one on his friends the whole time? Could he speak another language if he wanted, or did he just learn that one phrase? It’s one of the worst aspects of this new movie because it opens up a whole can of worms. Also, the audience can understand the sentiment behind Groot’s words most of the time anyway.
