Square Enix showed off lots of gameplay Sunday with its E3 presentation, featuring plenty of new stuff including its upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy game. On the list of platforms on which the game would be releasing, it seemed that Nintendo's console was sadly excluded. But in a surprise announcement in its own presentation today, Nintendo revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy is indeed coming to Switch in October.

Square Enix's interpretation of Guardians lore appears to be a single-player, story-driven experience. Players will guide the somewhat anti-heroic Star-Lord (aka Peter Quill) along with his teammates Drax, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot as they travel the cosmos on the hunt for one big haul to dig themselves out of debt. Judging by the some of the content of the trailer, one thing soon leads to another and, as tends to happen, the fate of the galaxy soon hangs in the balance.

As with the previously-released Marvel's Avengers, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe should be aware that the characters in Guardians of the Galaxy might look and act a little differently than they might expect. That said, if the trailer is anything to go by the game should still be filled with mile-a-minute quipping in the same vein as the MCU films.

Fans of the comics will have seen plenty of familiar (and less familiar) faces in the trailer already, including Lady Hellbender and the Nova Corps. Long time comic readers will also have plenty of nostalgia to dig through if they sign up for the preorder and deluxe edition bonus content for Guardians of the Galaxy, consisting of alternate costumes for the characters based on older iterations of the team.

All in all, Guardians of the Galaxy looks like it could grant Square Enix a bit of goodwill after the lukewarm reception to Marvel's Avengers. In fact, if the game lives up to the trailer's hype, Square Enix could even learn a thing or two for its live-service game too. Those who have enjoyed the MCU movies will no doubt find plenty to enjoy here, and the gameplay looks fast-paced and exciting to boot. On top of that, Switch fans can now rest assured that they'll be able to take Groot and all the rest around with them on their hybrid console.

Guardians of the Galaxy will release on October 26 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
