Back in May, there was a leak concerning a Marvel property that had a few players get very excited. Said leak concerned a Guardians of the Galaxy game that could be revealed this year.

Now that leak has come to pass and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is revealed. Shown off at Square Enix's showcase, the game is a single player title that sees players take control of Star Lord, with the rest of the Guardians crew near at hand. Players will take on adventures with the Guardians trying to save people and pay their bills, all with a comedy adventure angle.

Alongside some gameplay, behind the scenes video, and a release date, the reveal for Guardians of the Galaxy also included some pre-order bonuses and a deluxe edition. Those who pre-order the game will get throwback Guardian skins. These are skins based directly on older looks for the characters drawn from the Guardians of the Galaxy comic books. As for the deluxe edition, it comes with a steelbook case and a hardcover mini-artbook. There are also exclusive Sun Lord and City Lord outfits for Star Lord. The biggest draw for the deluxe edition, however, may well be the soundtrack included as a digital download. All of this on top of the fact that Guardians of the Galaxy is not a live service game, which will undoubtedly please some fans.

Guardians of the Galaxy Deluxe Edition

While the deluxe edition and pre-orders are certainly big draws, the biggest draw of all is, of course, the game itself. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is a dedicated single player experience. Even though a five man team takes on the adventures, players only directly control Star Lord. As shown off during the gameplay trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy, the player selects one of the other four characters and then commands them to perform a specific attack on a specific enemy. So the other characters, in addition to doing their own thing, act as additional weapons in Star Lord's arsenal.

The encounters shown in the gameplay trailer were all enclosed battles against relatively small numbers of enemies. Each enemy seems to be a mini-puzzle in and of itself, with high health and specific ways to take them down. This enemy design could make for more engaging combat, something Marvel's Avengers: War for Wakanda's new enemies could learn from.

How much impact the other Guardians will passively have on combat remains to be seen. They could turn out to be useful allies for the player, or could prove to be next to useless. Only time will tell.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is scheduled to release on October 26 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
