Because of the quarantines implemented to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, James Gunn decided to sit down with remote fans to watch Guardians of the Galaxy. While the movie played, he took to Twitter to answer any questions that fans had for him.

James Gunn's resulting answers yielded some pretty interesting behind-the-scenes details for the movie. But the most revealing ones revolved around the fan-favorite character, Rocket Raccoon.

According to Gunn, he wrote Rocket's character arc as something designed to be teased and set up in the first two films and then finally paid off in the third. While overarching character arcs are standard practice for good writers, what makes Rocket's interesting is the fact that Gunn sees it as the center of the franchise, not Peter Quill's — the main character.

Gunn states that Rocket Raccoon will play a big part in what happens in the future, or Guardians of the Galaxy 3. In the third movie, Gunn plans to unpack Rocket's backstory, and finally detail things like the painful experiments that placed the cybernetics in Rocket's back. From the way Gun words his descriptions, it sounds like instead of Rocket's story being a side plot, the whole of Guardians 3 will revolve around it.

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will release sometime after MCU Phase 4.
