In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Guardians of the Galaxy series adds some much needed levity to a franchise of films that takes itself pretty seriously most of the time. The offbeat characters contribute nicely to a franchise that lays claim to the most profitable movie of all time. But how long will their hijinks continue?

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is set to feature a big pay off for Rocket Raccoon's story arc, with director James Gunn taking to Twitter a few months back to answer fan questions on the subject. The third film, which is due to start filming sometime this year, might also be the last ride for all of the main cast.

Gunn recently jumped on Instagram to answer a fan question about whether this third film would be the last in the franchise. Gunn replied that it will likely be the last Guardians film he directs, but further than that, Gunn went on to say it will "probably be the last with the current team." With a cheeky "but you never know" to close out the response, he leaves the door open for things to continue after the third film. So fans will have to wait and see what happens.

Despite this, Gunn has already said that he has 'no plans' to make Guardians of the Galaxy 4, as the director stated that he wrote the first Guardians film with the idea in mind that it would end up being a trilogy. To take it further than that would betray his original vision for the project.

Fans will have to wait a while to see how the trilogy wraps up, but the very quotable franchise promises to deliver more good times soon.
