Now that Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is finally available, fans of the superhero team are able to take control of Star-lord and crew to try and save the galaxy while making a handful of friends, or enemies depending on which choices are made, along the way. While there's plenty of excellent elements in the game, one piece of Peter Quill's equipment really helps this version of him stand out from other interpretations of the character: his elemental blasters.

The Guardians of the Galaxy films in the MCU have plenty of unique and interesting elements of their own, but it might do the franchise well to "steal" the idea of Star-lord using elemental attacks for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Quill's attacks in the game aren't necessarily revolutionary in terms of unique video game moves, but, when viewed through the lens of the Guardians films, could do a lot to spice things up and change the formula for the third entry in the franchise.

Exploring Peter Quill's Powers in Guardians of the Galaxy 3

While Peter Quill is half-celestial, his range of powers in the films is pretty limited. Because he kills Ego and his planet in the second movie, Peter isn't able to use the celestial powers he acquired moving forward so he's pretty much just another regular person in the MCU. This isn't necessarily a bad thing as he makes up for his lack of real powers with the gadgets and devices he has in his arsenal paired with his quick thinking and ability to improvise. That said, adding elemental powers to his blasters could do some good in helping Marvel Studios explore what's possible with the character in the third film.

After all, Peter's Elemental Gun is one of his most iconic gadgets and it's appeared in plenty of comics and other media surrounding him and the Guardian, but, according to James Gunn, the weapon just didn't fit in the story that he was telling for the first two films. Now that audiences have seen a lot of the tricks up Star-lord's sleeves, however, they're likely looking for more interesting ways for Peter Quill to fight in the upcoming movie. The elemental gun could be a simple way to provide more diverse moves in the film without needing to really change much about Peter's arsenal or attacks. Plus, as seen in the game, there's plenty of room for combo attacks and other team-ups with the rest of the Guardians crew.

Expanding the Influence of Superhero Video Games

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy isn't the first video game to include Star-lord's Elemental Gun, but as the focus of the game is solely on the Guardians, a lot more attention gets paid to their individual moves. The Elemental Gun appeared in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 but the game didn't explore how interesting the blasters are because Star-lord wasn't the main focus. Now that he's in the spotlight, the game is able to shine a light on a really cool piece of hardware that the character has that isn't featured in the movies.

If someone involved in the making of the next Guardians movie is influenced enough by the game to include the Elemental Gun in the film, it would do a lot to help legitimize video games as a form of canonical storytelling with comic book characters. All too often video games feel like "recommended reading" for comic books and comic book films, but if a game is able to break into the mainstream by influencing a major MCU movie to include something that the game highlighted, then it could push the medium forward into being more legitimately recognized in superhero canon as opposed to being another thing to add to the pile.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
