Around this time last year, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic began trending on Twitter and now, it appears that history is repeating itself. The ever-popular Star Wars title has reappeared as the hot topic on Twitter, primarily due to its protagonist Revan. While it has been nearly 18 years since KOTOR released, fans remain enamored with the enigmatic protagonist that saw his debut in the original game. After setting Twitter ablaze with his strong claim, Gunn continued to interact with fans who were rightly shocked by the revelation.

While trending on Twitter, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic received high praise from an unexpected source when Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn took to Twitter and declared the title as the best video game of all time. If that wasn't going far enough, Gunn doubled down on his statement and proclaimed KOTOR as the greatest "Star Wars thing out of all Star Wars games, movies, TV shows, toys, and comics."

Amid the excitement, fans began to ponder if Gunn was hinting at a possible switch from Marvel films into the Star Wars universe. Gunn quickly shot down the rumors, as well as dismissing any potential adaptation that would transpose KOTOR to the big screen. Still, fans seemed to rally around Gunn's praise for the game, they generally supported the claim that it is indeed the greatest game of all time. At the very least, fans were nearly unanimous in their opinion that KOTOR is the greatest Star Wars game ever.

Oddly enough, the enduring popularity of the KOTOR franchise is forever accompanied by a giant question mark surrounding a potential sequel. In response to KOTOR trending and Gunn's massive support, fans once again begged the question of the lost third installment of KOTOR. Years ago, a KOTOR sequel was constantly whirling around the rumor mill after Bioware teased the idea, and the excitement has never fully lost momentum. Now, with the recent revival of KOTOR into the limelight, the opportunity seems primed once again. It's difficult to say whether Gunn would support a sequel to KOTOR, but he does seem to be a loyal Bioware fan.

As it stands, Gunn is just the highest-profile member among many die-hard KOTOR fanatics and his recent tweet only serves to confirm the fanbase's ongoing appetite for a potential sequel. Still, many fans believe that the time has long since passed, and any sequel could not possibly live up to the hype that has been generated around the original game. With plenty of Star Wars lore to choose from, perhaps KOTOR is best left as a treasured piece of nostalgia.
