The hardcore co-op survival game GTFO certainly isn't for the faint of heart, tasking players with managing their resources and carefully making their way through an underground compound to complete objectives. All the while, players have to painstakingly avoid sleeping monsters, which will band together in a massive hoard to take players down with the slightest offense. While GTFO has been in early access for years, it's time for it to make its full debut.

During The Game Awards, GTFO revealed a surprise trailer for version 1.0, along with dropping version 1.0 itself. Players will be getting a plethora of new features and improvements, which the trailer demonstrates well. The new trailer is tense, showing a group of four players making their way through one of GTFO's missions. They battle monsters, sneak through low-lit corridors, and do their best to survive when everything goes wrong.

However, while the trailer demonstrates the core of what GTFO is, the list of improvements is the real star of the show. Perhaps the biggest new feature is the addition of bots, which, while not as intelligent as humans, will let solo players have an easier time playing GTFO without searching for a group to play with. Additionally, players are getting a new melee combat system, player customization, better localization for certain languages, and checkpoints. Of course, there are also other, smaller improvements coming alongside the bigger changes.

Checkpoints, specifically, are a play at making GTFO more approachable, easing new players into the experience. Players can also expect a new semi-tutorial mission with the 1.0 update that will help familiarize them with GTFO's core mechanics. That means that GTFO will have easier avenues to get new players up and running without sacrificing its core identity, which is something many games struggle to do well.

If there was any doubt, GTFO is a horror game, and players should go into it expecting that. For those unfamiliar, the experience is similar to Deep Rock Galactic, though it requires players to be much more mindful of their surroundings, resources, and general situation.

GTFO originally debuted at The Game Awards 2017, launching into early access in 2019. It's fitting, then, that developer 10 Chambers decided to surprise release version 1.0 during this year's show, as it brings GTFO's journey full circle. With the promise of more content to come in the future, too, it's a great time to be a GTFO fan.

GTFO is available now on PC.
