In the run up to its release, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition has garnered some controversy, but not for the usual reasons seen with past Grand Theft Auto releases. Fans have been split on the trilogy’s visuals since they were first revealed, some believe Rockstar Games is charging too much for what are ultimately remasters of three PlayStation 2 era games, and they weren’t able to bring back the complete licensed Grand Theft Auto soundtracks from the original releases.

Now, Rockstar itself has broken the news that Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition won’t feature all of the original games’ cheats either. Speaking with USA Today, producer Rich Rosado explained that a few cheats had to be removed due to technical reasons and that a few things didn’t play well in the Unreal base. While the remasters use the Unreal Engine, all three games were originally built using RenderWare, so the change in engine has made it difficult to implement every cheat.

Rosado didn’t specify which cheats had been removed, although he also remained coy on how many cheats are in the games, adding that there is fun in discovery. While this is by no means an official confirmation, it’s possible that Rockstar has implement some new cheats altogether to make up for the ones that were taken out. In fact, one of them has already been discovered, which adds snowy weather and is possible in Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Cheating is usually unwelcomed in online multiplayer games, with there being entire websites dedicated to selling cheats to players, but it’s far less controversial when it comes to single-player games. Most of the cheats in the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy are harmless and exist purely for the fun of it, such as changing the weather, playing as some of the NPCs, or spawning a tank to drive around the city streets. Some of them can also make the game incredibly easy or even harder, like granting full health or raising the wanted level. However, players eager to try these cheats out will want to know that using them will lock out certain Trophies and Achievements.

As for Grand Theft Auto 6, there remains zero official information on the project, although rumors about it persist. The most recent is that the game is stuck in development hell, with said development apparently restarting after Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser left the company last year.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition is available now for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Android and iOS versions are scheduled for 2022.
