Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - The Definitive Edition is out now, giving GTA fans the chance to relive one of the most beloved games in the franchise with revamped graphics and a GTA 5-style control scheme. Rockstar Games has kept Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - The Definitive Edition and the rest of the GTA Trilogy mostly underwraps since its announcement, which meant that fans are having to learn a lot about the games by actually playing them.

This means that fans are just now discovering that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - The Definitive Edition is missing the co-op/multiplayer mode from the original San Andreas game. As some may recall, the original Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas had a secret co-op mode that fans could trigger by going to a special icon not far from CJ's house at Grove Street. If players had a second controller and a second player handy, the second player could choose from a variety of GTA San Andreas characters and then they could wreak havoc on the open world together.

Does GTA San Andreas Definitive Edition Have Multiplayer?

Unfortunately, this mode has been removed in this new version of the game, meaning GTA San Andreas Definitive Edition does not have co-op or multiplayer of any kind. If players go to the spot where the co-op activation icon is supposed to be, they'll find nothing. This may not be all that surprising since the mobile port of San Andreas removed co-op as well, but it's still likely disappointing to some players who were hoping for some nostalgic co-op action.

Rockstar Games has not offered an explanation as to why co-op is missing in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - The Definitive Edition, but it's possible that it has something to do with the new engine or the fact that it's more graphically-intensive than the original. GTA: San Andreas Definitive Edition's graphics are quite the leap forward when compared to the original release, and that could play a role.

The lack of co-op isn't the only way that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - The Definitive Edition differs from the original game. Fans will also notice that there have been changes to the San Andreas radio stations, as well as the radio stations in Grand Theft Auto 3 and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. There are some subtle other changes as well, like the addition of a Red Dead Redemption 2 easter egg that players can spot early on in San Andreas. It's possible there are even more changes for fans to discover, which will likely come to light as more people get their hands on the game.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X with mobile versions also in development.
