UPDATE 3/18: The servers for both GTA Online and Red Dead Online are back up, as is the Rockstar Social Club. Original story follows.

On March 18, the servers for both GTA Online and Red Dead Online went down for unknown reasons. Rockstar Games acknowledged the outage on its official support page, with the issues impacting the games on all platforms. Additionally, Rockstar has confirmed that its Social Club services are also down.

At the time of this writing, Rockstar hasn't revealed what exactly caused the servers for both GTA Online and Red Dead Online to go down. It also hasn't offered a timeline of when fans can expect the services for both games to be restored. For now, fans of the popular open world games will have to stick to their single-player content if they want to play.

Of course, the experiences offered in GTA Online and Red Dead Online are quite different than the gameplay fans can expect from the single player offerings in the Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 base games. In fact, they're often considered completely separate entities by Rockstar, as opposed to just being the multiplayer components for their respective games.

We've seen this reflected in the way Rockstar supports the titles. Rockstar has largely ignored the single player portions of Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 post-launch, instead choosing to invest most of its time and resources into creating new content for the online multiplayer. It's safe to say that this is due to the added revenue Rockstar gets from online, which helped Grand Theft Auto 5 become the most profitable entertainment product of all time.

Even so, some fans are holding out hope that Rockstar Games will provide some kind of single player DLC for Red Dead Redemption 2. It abandoned its single player DLC plans for Grand Theft Auto 5, but a potential Undead Nightmare easter egg possibly hints that an Undead Nightmare followup is in in the cards for Red Dead Redemption 2.

In the meantime, fans of both GTA Online and Red Dead Online should expect continued support from Rockstar Games moving forward, especially as they both continue to generate significant revenue for the company. Of course, the servers for the games will need to be working for Rockstar to make any money off them, and so a fix for the current server downtime should be coming soon.

We will update this article as soon as the servers for GTA Online and Red Dead Online are back in working order.
