Grand Theft Auto Online is taking players to the tropical paradise of Cayo Perico, a private party island owned by the drug lord El Rubio. In addition to a new heist and a submarine, the Cayo Perico Heist content update also has a cameo from Dr. Dre. However, what many fans want to know is how to find El Rubio’s legendary handgun, the Perico Pistol.
Inspired by the titular weapon from the 1974 James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun, the Perico Pistol is a secret firearm hidden in El Rubio’s heavily fortified compound. Grand Theft Auto Online players will have their work cut out for them, because even after buying a submarine and getting past the henchman with assault rifles, there’s no guarantee the player will snag this prize.
To get to the Perico Pistol, players will have to purchase the Kosatka submarine from Warstock Cache and Carry for the hefty price of $2.2 million - but players can also use their new vehicle to search for treasure, which may help recuperate their losses. After traveling to Cayo Perico, players will need to search the island to locate a sleeping guard. The exact location is randomized, but once players find the guard, they’ll be able to steal a “Small Key.”
Next, players must travel to El Rubio’s compound, being careful to remain undetected by enemies. The compound has six possible points of entry, but once players have entered the compound, their target is the main building. The narcotrafficker’s office can be accessed via a set of stairs or an elevator in the basement. The stairs are more easily located, but this route makes players more vulnerable to enemy attack. Inside El Rubio’s office, players can find the Perico Pistol in the righthand drawer of the desk.
However, as mentioned, this doesn’t guarantee that all players will receive the gilded handgun. The catch is that only the individual who collects the gun will be given the prize. Gamers playing on a team may have to return and repeat the heist multiple times in order for all team members to get their own Perico Pistol. Rockstar Games has helped fans out a little, though, as the Cayo Perico Heist reveal also indicated that this will be the first heist designed to allow single-player completion.
As the first new location added to Grand Theft Auto Online in the seven years since its release, Cayo Perico boasts beautiful views, nonstop parties, and the perfect target for a heist. Some gamers have been disappointed to learn that the island is only explorable and accessible during the heist, but the plethora of new content is still sure to revitalize an almost decade-old title. For those who get their hands on the Perico Pistol, it also offers up the opportunity to imitate the world’s most famous, fictional spy.
Grand Theft Auto Online is available now for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
