In an open world game like Grand Theft Auto Online, running into those who aren't interested in playing nice is commonplace. While many griefing incidents end with only the targeted player suffering for it, sometimes griefers get exactly what they deserve.

Many times, switching to passive mode in GTA Online is an easy way to avoid attacks like these. However, it's not always possible, depending on what the player is doing or driving. Terrorbyte vehicles with weapons or drones, for example, can't be actively used while in passive mode, making this player something of a sitting duck for a griefer to come and harass them.

Reddit user MacTormod shared a brief GTA Online gameplay video of the event in action. They can be seen casually driving their Terrorbyte, seemingly with no active missions in progress or star wanted level. The peace is quickly broken up by the approach of another player, flying a Hydra jet. Without any warning, the Hydra opens fire with its explosive rounds, targeting MacTormod's Terrorbyte.

While this type of attack would have likely led to instant destruction in many of GTA Online's vehicles, the Terrorbyte is pretty tough, able to withstand a large number of direct attacks. Though MacTormod tries to evade, a few of the strikes hit the Terrorbyte. Instead of harming it, though, the explosive force sends the Terrorbyte airbound, and it clips the Hydra's wing, instantly destroying it.

Fellow players in the comments couldn't praise the video enough, sharing stories of being griefed in similar ways and the frustration that comes when revenge is impossible due to players disconnecting after committing attacks like these. As a result, seeing someone who was apparently passive in the game unintentionally get payback on an attempted attack is quite satisfying.

Other players on MacTormod's server likely appreciated the turnabout, as well. According to MacTormod, the griefer had been wreaking havoc, killing players. However, after this humiliating bit of karma, they promptly took off, either switching to a new server or quitting the game entirely. The fact that MacTormod ends up collecting a bounty on the griefer in question made it all the more enjoyable for viewers and likely his fellow players, as well.

GTA Online can be played without raising a hand against fellow players, but many take the opportunity to fight one another in the game's versus modes or simply out in the game's world. Unfortunately, spending large sums of in-game money on vehicles can put a target on a player's back. Thankfully, not every griefing incident has to end poorly for players who are just trying to get from point A to point B.

GTA 5 is out now for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions in development.
