For many, Grand Theft Auto Online is a decent way to escape the craziness of the world right now. It gives players a chance to explore a city, connect with friends, and generally be out and about, making it a digital alternative to real-life – though with some obvious liberties. However, a new GTA Online glitch appears to be giving players some extra icing on the cake.

It appears that GTA Online is randomly giving players money, though no one is entirely sure why. Rockstar gave players a free $500,000 for GTA Online recently, which is apparently allowing players to double-dip at random. Over on Reddit, players are reporting receiving the sum multiple times, with some getting roughly $1.5 million thus far.

It doesn't appear that there's any real rhyme or reason to the money being distributed into players' accounts, though most are happily accepting the free money. Grand Theft Auto Online has been increasing rewards for some activities, and with millions remaining at home to avoid coronavirus, the extra money may very well be an additional perk for players.

In February, Rockstar offered GTA Online players $1 million in-game dollars for free, just as news of the coronavirus was starting to ramp up. In the time since, more players have flocked online to different games, with various services reporting record-high player counts in the past few weeks.

It's unclear if Rockstar intended for this to happen or if it's just a happy accident. Considering the state of the world right now, it doesn't seem like Rockstar would take action for something outside of players' control, with the worst-case scenario likely being the money getting revoked. GTA Online has had issues with cheating in the seven years since it launched, but this seems like a different issue entirely.

Rockstar may even allow players to keep the money, though it seems to be happening at random, so it may be a bit unfair for those that didn't receive it multiple times. Still, for those that did end up getting the extra cash in their digital bank accounts, it's a small boon to distract from real-world issues.

GTA Online is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
