This decade has seen some incredible games and while there are plenty of subjective opinions about which titles were the best, sales figures are what keep developers afloat. The NPD Group tracks the sales of many items, including games, and they have released data which confirms the top 10 most commercially successful games. Some players will likely be disappointed about their favorite games not being included, yet this list has sold a staggering amount of units.

The decade saw the continuation of franchises such as Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto and unsurprisingly these incredibly popular games remained in the spotlight. In fact, in the top 10 selling games of the decade, there is only one game that is not part of a series. Some may claim that there is a disappointing amount of original titles, however, this is what consumers are purchasing the most.

Despite criticism directed at the Call of Duty, the series dominates this list with the franchise taking seven places out of a possible ten. Furthermore, two developers are responsible for nine of the top 10 selling games. This may be reflective of increasing video game monopolies, but there is also something to be said about the quality of the games that sold incredibly well. The list below shows just how well Take 2 Interactive and Activision Blizzard have done in the last decade.

Call of duty best seller

The top spot was held by Grand Theft Auto 5 and as anticipation for GTA6 begins it looks like the series will continue to lead sales in this decade. While the amount of Call of Duty titles may suggest a saturated market with some claiming that shooters are becoming boring, the latest Modern Warfare reboot seems to have drawn in more fans than ever and will quite possibly allow the series to prosper in the next decade as well. Which series will dominate the next ten years is a mystery, but Take 2 Interactive will surely hope to repeat its sales triumph.

Grand Theft Auto 5 was released to critical acclaim and its online features have been constantly updated years after its release keeping fans entertained. It seems delivering on a reputation of good gameplay is the surest way for companies to make a profit. Creating franchises is profitable for companies and this last decade has showcased just how successful they can be. After the reception of a lot of the best-selling games, it looks like they will continue to prosper unless a new hit franchise is born in this decade.
