The boss of one of Rockstar Games' development teams reveals why Grand Theft Auto 6 may not be released soon. A hip hop group had leaked the GTA 6 release date, suggesting that the game could be released next year, but this news makes that highly unlikely.

Speaking to PC Gamer, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson said that with GTA Online updates, "we try to keep plans going roughly a year out." The development team likes to "have the flexibility to be responsive to any changes" which is why this isn't always shared with GTA Online players. However, "players should feel confident that we have a ton of brand new ideas still to come," said Nelson. Nelson also said that GTA Online has "just hit record player numbers," this comes as no surprise as GTA 5 is selling incredibly well.

If Rockstar is planning another year or more of GTA Online updates, it makes it unlikely that GTA 6 is going to be released between now and then. There had been rumors that GTA 6 would be a PS5 exclusive game and that the game could potentially be a launch title for the new console. This always sounded unlikely and Nelson has just added to that. Rockstar probably won't release GTA 6 while GTA Online is making so much money and the game likely won't stop making money until Rockstar stops releasing so much DLC for it.

However, just because Rockstar is developing new DLC for GTA Online doesn't mean that it isn't making another large game. The company has posted several job listings that seem to confirm that it is making an open-world game for PS5 and Xbox Project Scarlett. Many fans had thought that this was GTA 6, as it has been so many years since GTA 5 was released. Some had also suggested that it could be Bully 2.

A new rumor suggests that the next Rockstar game could be a medieval game. If that is what Rockstar is developing, then that would be why the company is planning so much GTA Online DLC. In the time it takes Rockstar to release the medieval game and begin or finish developing GTA 6, GTA Online players may be playing the game much less and may be ready to buy a new one. It's not confirmed if that is what's happening, but it does seem that GTA 6 isn't happening soon.
