Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 5 certainly needs no introduction. First released in 2013 on the PS3 and Xbox 360, the open-world crime drama was then rereleased to the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. With over six billion dollars in revenue generated and more than a staggering 150 million copies sold, Grand Theft Auto 5 has become the most profitable piece of entertainment of all time.

With Grand Theft Auto 5 having such incredible sales for developer Rockstar, it makes sense for the company to decide to rerelease the title once again. First announced for next-gen consoles in June 2020, Grand Theft Auto 5 Expanded and Enhanced recently received another trailer giving eager gamers their first look at the game running on the more powerful hardware.

Shown off at the PlayStation Showcase event on September 9th, the new Grand Theft Auto 5 trailer has not been met with a very positive reaction. After such a lengthy amount of time since the original release of the game in 2013, fans were expecting a significant improvement to the games’ visuals or even new content. When the reveal dropped with minor improvements at best, gamers began “downvote bombing” the new GTA 5 trailer on YouTube.

Reddit user HelljumperCS has posted a comparison shot featuring the footage from the new trailer, showcasing one significant shortcoming in the updated title. The side-by-side analysis puts the upgraded GTA 5 against the Xbox 360 racer Forza Motorsport 3, which was released in 2009. The post shows an interior view of a car looking at the drivers’ side mirror. In Forza Motorsport 3, players can see the reflection of the surrounding track in the mirror quite clearly; In Grand Theft Auto 5, the reflection is essentially non-existent.

While it might seem a little unfair to compare a closed track racing title that only focuses on car models and the road against an open-world city simulation with pedestrians and various dynamic systems interacting, Forza Motorsport 3 is running on the now-ancient Xbox 360 hardware. With the amount of horsepower that the PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles are packing, fans are expecting more. Considering that ray-traced reflections like the ones in Marvel’s Spider-Man are a big selling point of the new devices, it's disappointing to see such poor mirrors in GTA 5.

Still, the game is several months away from its release date. The PS5 and Series S/X version of GTA 5 was recently delayed from its original fall 2021 release date. This gives the developers more time to try and improve the visuals of the game, although it is unlikely that a feature as significant as ray-traced reflections in mirrors will be added by release.

Grand Theft Auto 5 Expanded and Enhanced is set to release in March 2022 on PS5 and Xbox Series S/X.
