Those of us hoping to roam the streets in the as-of-yet unknown city of Grand Theft Auto 5 will likely have to wait for 2012, says analyst Mike Hikey.
Hickey, an analyst for Janco Partners, based this deduction off of recent Take Two Interactive financial announcements changing the end of their fiscal year to March 31st. This adjustment shows that Take Two is planning on focusing on two major releases for their next year: L.A. Noire and Max Payne 3, as well as the potential release of Duke Nukem Forever. These three releases, the analyst assumes, should be more than enough for the company to turn a healthy profit.
He goes on to estimate that Take Two will likely push out Grand Theft Auto 5 in their 2012-2013 fiscal year, meaning those who believe in the Mayan calendar apocalypse are going to be pretty grumpy about the amount of time they have to play it. In what comes as absolutely no surprise he predicts its going to be huge hit, selling upwards of 16 million copies and procuring 750 million dollars in revenue for the publisher.
Sales will be hugely boosted from the mere fact that when GTA4 came out, there were only 14 million combined Xbox and PS3 consoles in 2008 (was it really that long ago GTA4 came out? I feel old now). In 2010 those digits have reversed and there are 41 consoles in homes across the world, each potentially a customer for Rockstar to dish out some good ol' offensive content to.
At the end of the day, the important thing is that Hickey's logic makes sense. As much as it would be amazing to wake up tomorrow and have Nico Bellic's successor ready to start some mayhem, we're going to have to wait for the developers at Rockstar to polish the shiny stone into the powerhouse they have a reputation of making. Dan Houser, Vice President of Rockstar Games, had already written a 1,000 page script for the game a year ago, meaning by this time development is likely already ongoing.
