Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters is being developed by Griptonite Games and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment for the Wii, Nintendo 3DS, and original DS. Although the game employs the likeness and voice talent of Ryan Reynolds, the story doesn’t follow that of the upcoming movie adaptation. Some of the origin story elements may be present, but the game’s story centers around the Green Lantern Corps and Hal Jordan taking on the race of androids known as the Manhunters. The game looks to offer an exciting action-adventure experience that fans can play on the go. Lately, more obscure comic book superheroes have been in the spotlight thanks to Marvel and DC's latest movie adaptations. Comic book fans have been familiar with characters like Iron Man and Thor for some time now, but they are recent discoveries to many people who saw them for the first time in theaters.

Green Lantern starring Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan is the next superhero film set to grace the silver screen and will likely create a host of new Green Lantern fans. Warner Bros. is taking advantage of this popularity by offering Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters as a video game tie-in, aimed at nearly every console and platform.

Movie tie-in video games have a long history of being rushed, cheap, and cookie-cutter cash-grabs. However, within this sea of terrible games there are a few wonderful gems. Superhero games like Batman: Arkham Asylum and The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction are great examples of what a studio should be aiming for when developing a superhero movie tie-in.

After all, it's the spirit of the characters that fans love, not the appearance.

The trailer does a decent enough job of getting me excited about Green Lantern, but more than anything it makes me want to see the upcoming movie. Nothing really stands out in the trailer when it comes to the gameplay. There isn’t enough footage to form a solid opinion, but from this quick glance the game looks like a run-of-the-mill action-adventure game.

Hopefully these initial feelings are wrong and the game turns out to be one of the rare great movie tie-ins. Until then, check out the uniquely stylish character renders from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.
