Greedfall players spend a lot of their time helping the party member with personal issues. Often, this requires more than just charging headlong into battle, sometimes requiring players to wear a specific disguise or pass difficult dialogue checks.

However, one side quest in particular has been causing trouble. Specifically, many players struggle to save Wilhem during Kurt’s companion quest. This quick walkthrough will explain how to rescue him during Greedfall’s Amongst the Ghosts side quest.

Players unlock the quest by speaking with Kurt after completing the quests Missing in Action and Old Countries in the New World. If it’s been more than six in-game hours since completing Missing in action, the player can talk to Kurt immediately after leaving the Governor’s Mansion in New Sérène. Otherwise, they’ll have to wait until the entire six hours pass.

The Ghost Camp

Upon speaking to him, Kurt will inform the player that he’s learned the Ghost Regiment is camped. As it is his quest, players will need to have Kurt in their party. To find the camp, travel to Wenshaganaw, The Singing Waters, which the party passed through on the road to San Matheus. They can get there by fast traveling or following the road north then west from New Sérène. Players will find the camp hidden at the end of a narrow ravine on the eastern edge of the map.

Once through the gate, Kurt will automatically begin a conversation with the camp’s commander, Captain Rolf. Kurt doesn’t buy Rolf’s excuses about the missing soldiers, suggesting the player speaks with the officers in charge of training. Exploring all the dialogue options and passing a Charisma check with the female instructor reveals that the missing soldier, Reiner, was in the male instructor’s squad. When confronted, the male instructor claims Reiner fell to his death in a ravine.

Kurt will then suggests talking to the recruits. Questioning three recruits reveals that Recruit Wilhem knows something but is too afraid to talk with the officers in earshot. While Kurt distracts the instructors, speak to Wilhem again to hear the full story of Reiner’s death. Talk to Kurt again outside the camp, and he’ll suggest investigating the Captains’ quarters and the locked basement. Go to the barracks and go up the stairs. Captain Rolfs’s rooms are through the last door on the right. There, collect the key and letters before exploring the basement to uncover more of the Coin Guard’s dark secrets.

Saving Wilhelm

To save Wilhelm in Greedfall, players need to rescue him before confronting Captain Rolf. To do so, head out through the camp’s northern gate, following the waypoint to where the soldiers are fighting. Here, it helps to either have high Charisma or an Intuition of at least 1. Successfully passing either check makes the recruits stand down, though the player still needs to fight both instructors. Failing to convince them forces players to kill the other recruits. Doing so lowers the player’s reputation with the Coin Guard by 1. However, they’ll always gain 1 point with Kurt for rescuing Wilhelm.

Sparing the Recruits

Players who want the Greedfall quest’s best ending also have to bring down Captain Rolf without killing the recruits in the camp. First, sneak past the patrolling guards by using the walls and wooden structures for cover. Then, climb the ledge at the south of the camp. It leads to a hidden path to the training pit.

Rolf will be waiting there with a company of soldiers. He’ll order them to attack, but players can avoid most of the fight by telling them about saving Wilhem. The recruits will back off, leaving the player and their party to fight Rolf and complete Greedfall’s Amongst the Ghosts quest.

Greedfall is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
