Not many CRPGs get made anymore despite the overwhelming success of Baldur's Gate and the Neverwinter Nights series. There are still a few that get made, though, one of which is Divinity: Original Sin 2. This behemoth of an RPG has enough content to keep players engaged for hundreds of hours, but this playtime can balloon further with mods.

Divinity 2: The Best Gift Bags To Use In Every Playthrough
A little while after Divinity: Original Sin 2 released, the developers decided to add gift bags to the game. These are the best ones.

Content mods aren't common for Original Sin 2, but the number of mods that range from overhauls to small quality of life gives just enough incentive to try another playthrough. This game has few issues, to begin with, but well-made mods put Original Sin 2 on another level of quality entirely. Here are several Divinity: Original Sin 2 mods that make the game even better. This list is in no particular order.

Updated January 4, 2024 by Ritwik Mitra: With the immense success that Larian Entertainment is currently enjoying courtesy of Baldur's Gate 3's smashing success, it's easy to see why fans may be interested in the studio's earlier offerings too. Their work on Divinity: Original Sin and its sequel set the stage for the studio to go all-out in the development of a deep and complex CRPG that is jam-packed with content.

Original Sin 2 was hailed as one of the greatest modern CRPGs of all time, and players who want to enjoy this masterpiece now can check out a wealth of mods if they wish to personalize the experience for themselves.

1 The Cheat Commander

Players who have finished Divinity: Original Sin 2 multiple times may find the grind in each playthrough to be a bit too much to handle. Sometimes, players just want access to the fanciest toys without having to waste too much time trying to respec their build or investing every point wisely.

The Cheat Commander is a simple mod that lets players allocate stats without wasting any time, and that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what this mod can accomplish. Gold, experience, levels, gear, and everything else along the same lines can be generated by this mod, making things easier for players who don't want to punish themselves for trying to accomplish the same tasks over and over again.

2 Interesting Uniques

Unique gear should be something that players look forward to, featuring increased stats and huge bonuses that can help players tackle insurmountable odds and come out victorious. However, most of the unique gear in Original Sin 2 ends up being something that players equip for a few hours before moving on to something bigger and flashier.

This mod aims to make each unique item in the game all the more viable, incentivizing people to equip these unique items whenever they get their hands on a particular specimen. Players don't have to be disappointed by a unique item with basic attribute bonuses, since the vast majority of items have a special effect attached to them now too.

3 Infinity Spirit Vision

Spirit Vision in divinity 2 will reveal spirits that can help with quests

Spirit Vision is one of the most important abilities a player can use to uncover hidden quests, talk to spirits that have passed on, and uncover any hidden information that will help them understand the lore of the world even more. Unfortunately, this skill needs to be activated every single time, and the instances for its use aren't that obvious.

This can cause players to miss entertaining encounters and puzzle solutions, which can become pretty grating after a point. Thankfully, with the Infinity Spirit Vision mod, players don't have to manually trigger this power every single time, which saves players the headache of wondering if they've missed out on a ghostly encounter because they forgot to turn Spirit Vision on.

4 Epic Encounters: Origins

Divinity Original Sin 2 Epic Encounters Origins

Epic Encounters: Origins is arguably the most ambitious, comprehensive overhaul mod one can find for Divinity: Original Sin 2. The number of changes here is staggering, ranging from balance tweaks to the addition of new progression systems. Covering all of them would warrant an article on its own, but here's a cliff notes version of what has been added or changed:

  • A new progression system named Ascension has been added. Similar to Grim Dawn's Constellation system, players can allocate points into a multitude of skill trees for various build-defining buffs. This runs alongside Original Sin 2's standard character progression.
  • Status effects have seen a major overhaul. Stunlocking has been removed, and replaced with the tiered Battered and Harried status effects. Players will need to utilize both physical and magic damage over multiple turns to apply powerful status effects on targets. This results in a game that is much less focused on CCing enemies to death.
  • Source is now a core part of combat, allowing players to infuse their skills with powerful secondary effects.
  • Nearly every skill and item has been rebalanced.

For those interested in learning more about this mod, the developers have created a document that goes through each change in thorough detail. It can be read here.

Veterans who can't stand Divinity's combat balance need to give this mod a try. It does an excellent job of shifting Original Sin 2's combat to a more tactical turn-based RPG than what Larian accomplished. Its Ascension system is also expertly done, granting the addictive character progression and build diversity seen in ARPGs without taking away from Original Sin 2's CRPG roots.

Epic Encounters: Origins is only available through the developer's Discord server due to the mod's in-development state. A link can be found here. Head to the #download tab to find a download link. Be sure to read the FAQ before installing it.

How Does It Compare To Divinity Unleashed?

Divinity Unleashed is much easier to understand and install. While that mod can be used in the middle of any playthrough with little issue, Epic Encounters requires a new game save. Some might also consider Epic Encounters' changes too radical for their liking. For players who want a combat overhaul and nothing else, Divinity Unleashed is an excellent choice. Players who want Divinity: Original Sin 2 to feel like an entirely new game will love Epic Encounter: Origins.

5 8 AP (Definitive Edition)

8 AP in Divinity Original Sin 2

Action Points govern how all the actions a character can perform during their turn in Divinity: Original Sin 2. Maintaining a decent store of AP is important to ensure that players can whip out the techniques they want during their turn without being completely overwhelmed by their opponents. However, despite how well-balanced the game is, there are times when players feel that the vanilla 6 AP is so low that they can't get anything done with this limit.

Thankfully, players can opt for the 8 AP mod instead, increasing this limit quite a bit and allowing players to be less stingy about using up their AP in every turn. While some people may argue that the game itself has an option for the same, enabling that form of 8 AP leads to achievements being disabled, which may not be ideal for some players who want to enjoy the best of both worlds!

6 Necromancy Rebalanced 2.0

Divinity Original Sin 2 Necromancy Rebalanced Mod

Divinity: Original Sin 2 allows for a wide range of builds that are all viable for all but the hardest content. Well, everything except for Necromancy. This school of magic is pitifully weak when compared to other archetypes.

Necromancy Rebalanced 2.0 aims to address this, overhauling the existing skills while adding new ones to allow for more playstyle choices. Players can finally become an army of the undead with this mod's host of new summon abilities.

7 Void Knight Class

Void Knight Class mod for Divinity Original Sin 2

There is a wealth of classes that players can mess around with in Divinity: Original Sin 2, but people who have gone through the game over and over again may get bored of using the same skills over and over again, especially with a whopping six party members aiding them at every step of the way! This is why custom class mods have become all the rage for this game, with the Void Knight being one particularly enticing class that many players love.

8 Improved Camera

Having a set angle tied to the camera isn't uncommon in isometric RPG titles like Baldur's Gate or Fallout, but this restriction can result in clunky exploration or combat encounters. Original Sin 2's camera is by no means bad, but it could be better.

Improved Camera aims to fix this by allowing full control over the camera. It is now possible to tilt the camera to any angle the player wishes, letting players get extremely close to a character or look across the grand environments that are otherwise hard to appreciate. Just note that the game wasn't intended for a camera this flexible, as some characters and environments will look strange when viewed from certain angles.

9 Vanity

One thing Divinity: Original Sin 2 nails is its armor design. Even the lower-level gear looks distinct and worth wearing for visuals alone. The problem is that Larian didn't include a proper transmogrification system in the game.

Luckily, modders have added a pseudo-transmog system into the game. Vanity allows players to store the appearance of the armor in a ring and apply it to any armor set the player wants. It can feel a little unintuitive initially, but this mod is the best option for adding proper transmog into Original Sin 2.

10 Younger And Smoother Faces

Younger and Smoother Faces mod for Divinity Original Sin 2

Most modern CRPGs allow players to control aged adventures who have a lot of experience under their belt, which makes sense given just how tough the scenarios of games like Divinity: Original Sin 2 are. However, while the idea of controlling aged characters in this game sounds sensible, some players might want their characters to look a bit younger — for aesthetic reasons if nothing else.

This mod helps players accomplish the same, making aged faces appear way younger in the game. It's a pretty simple mod, but a great one nevertheless for fans who want their party of adventurers to look less rugged and more youthful.

11 Automatic Item Leveling

Divinity Original Sin 2 Automatic Item Leveling Mod
Created by: frasdoge (Steam Workshop)

Farming new gear for builds can be fun in loot-heavy games such as Borderlands, but feel ill-placed in more story-centric RPGs like Divinity. Gear in Divinity: Original Sin 2 does not scale with the player's level.

Automatic Item Leveling does exactly as one would expect. Every time the player levels up, the game will update that character's gear to match their new level. Miscellaneous stats are also upgraded. This allows players to spend less time earning levels before farming certain items and more time playing the game at their own pace. While this falls closer to a cheat mod than anything else, it does let players focus more on the game's story instead of its itemization system.

The Epic Encounters: Origins mod already has an item upgrading system in place, making this mod redundant when both are used together.

12 Fort Joy Respec

Fort Joy is the first major area players explore in the game. It's also the area where they might realize that their build is nowhere near ideal to tackle the various threats present in the game.

Unfortunately, there's a long way to go before players get the opportunity to respec their character. Thankfully, with the Fort Joy respec mod, players who want to tweak their characters instantly can do the same with relative ease.

13 Divinity Unleashed

Divinity Original Sin 2 Initiative In Fights

One of Original Sin 2's most popular overhauls, Divinity Unleashed is an ambitious overhaul of the game's core mechanics to shake up combat and stat attributes. Note that a script extender is required to play this, which should hint at how many changes this mod makes.

Best Modern-Day CRPGs, Ranked
CRPG was once thought to be a dead genre, but games like Disco Elysium & Divinity Original Sin resurrected it. Here are the best modern ones.

Above all, Divinity Unleashed is a combat overhaul focused on removing the abundant stun-locking that occurred in the base game. In its place are a multitude of intelligent balance tweaks and new systems that enhance build diversity, and tactical options in combat, all while making Original Sin 2's difficulty intact.

Some of the mod's largest changes are listed below:

  • Armor now grants flat damage reduction instead of a second health bar.
  • Armor no longer blocks status effects.
  • Crowd control status effects were reworked to provide powerful debuffs instead. Skipping turns has been replaced with lowered movement speed, lower AP gains, and elemental weaknesses. In general, this makes Original Sin 2's combat much faster and less reliant on alpha-striking.
  • Attributes and ability bonuses were overhauled to provide more build-enabling bonuses.
  • Nearly every skill was rebalanced with the combat changes in mind.

A full list of changes can be found here.

These changes dramatically change how combat pans out, turning Original Sin 2 into a much more tactical RPG. The massive rebalance in Divinity Unleashed also means that build variety is in a much better spot than in vanilla. Veteran players tired of alpha-striking enemies on turn one should give this mod a try.

14 Free Pet Pal

Pet Pal is one of the most important traits anyone can have in Divinity: Original Sin 2. After all, almost every animal in the game has unique dialogue that players can miss out on if they don't have the Pet Pal trait.

With this mod, Pet Pal becomes a default trait for most characters so that they can access all this content from the get-go without having to invest valuable points. Given how tough the gameplay of Original Sin 2 can get at times, each trait point becomes infinitely valuable.

15 Party Size Evolve

The graphics of Divinity: Original Sin 2 are pretty great in their own right. However, there are bound to be certain players who want every aspect of the visuals to be nigh perfect.

That's why mods exist to tweak the smallest visual components in most games. Original Sin 2 is no exception to this rule, with players being able to use the HQ World and Icons mod to improve the quality of the various visual artifacts present in the game.

17 Crafting Overhaul

Divinity Original Sin 2 Crafting Overhaul Mod

Crafting is an underutilized mechanic in Original Sin 2 that most players don't even know exists. Creating and modifying gear is satisfying in nearly any RPG, but Divinity's crafting system lacked the depth the rest of the game offers.

That is where Crafting Overhaul comes in. This mod adds over 1,800 recipes to the game, ranging from creating new armor types to armor dyes. Not only does this mod give players a larger incentive to craft, but the things this mod lets players create make crafting relevant for any character in any playthrough.

For those who tire of the same-looking characters at character creation, Majora's Character Creation Plus mod is worth installing. Hundreds of new options are included in character creation to make each party member visually distinct.

Dozens of new hairstyles, more exotic appearances for Elves, and even a flaming skull as a skeleton are a few examples of what this mod provides. No race or gender is left out either, and the quality of the new assets matches and even exceeds what Larian offers in the base game. Majora's Character Creation Plus is worth a look.

One of the worst parts of using mods in Divinity: Original Sin 2 is that achievements are disabled if the game detects altered files. It's a shame... so it's great that a mod exists to counter this problem.

With the simply-titled Achievements mod, these trophies are restored for games with mods. It's a great way to make the game flow more naturally since players aren't missing out on these achievements just because they wanted to use a few quality-of-life mods.

20 Odinblade's Class Mods

Divinity Original Sin 2 Character Art

If players have modded Original Sin 2 at all, they've likely come across Odinblade's various class overhauls and class additions. These mods are all fantastic, either making certain character archetypes more viable or adding new ones entirely.

Most of Odinblade's mods rebalance core class skills while introducing new ones, all of which are connected by a central mechanic. Pyromancers, for example, can apply stacks of Scorched to targets that deal damage at turn start or when the stacks are incremented. This results in Pyromancers playing much more aggressively than normal and gives more niche skills a place in the sandbox. If players find any skill underwhelming in Original Sin 2, Odinblade likely has an overhaul that makes it viable.
