Despite Graveyard Keeper being hailed as a Stardew Valley-like with a macabre twist, there are still plenty of mechanics that players can indulge in to lighten the mood between the constant organ harvesting and witch burnings.

One such mechanic sees gamers don their chef hat and create various foods - not just a fun time waster, food can restore the player's energy, and some high-quality dishes are required as part of NPC quest lines that must be completed to finish the game. This guide will help players understand what is needed to create gold-quality food and provide some tips to make the process easier overall.

What Is Gold-Quality Food?

Not all food items are created equally - several of the game's dishes are locked to a single 'standard' quality, but when browsing the oven or cooking table menus, the player may find some dishes with an arrow beneath them. NOTE - most dishes are locked until favors have been completed for NPCs or meeting other special requirements.

Collapsing this menu reveals the ingredients that are required to increase the final food's quality - in this instance, the Baked Pumpkin dish is guaranteed to be gold quality if a golden-quality pumpkin is used to make it.

Is There An Easier Way To Get Gold-Quality Food?

Players aren't limited to only using gold-quality ingredients - as seen in the screenshot above, a silver-quality pumpkin still has a 20% chance of creating a gold-quality vegetable soup, and this is true for most recipes.

To maximize their chances of success (and save on the time required to get gold-quality ingredients), players can follow these steps:

  1. Save the game by sleeping in their bed.
  2. Using silver-quality ingredients and attempting to create the food.
  3. If the food is silver quality, simply return to the main menu without saving the game.
  4. Reload the save and try again until a gold-quality dish is produced!

The Zen garden near the player's home can also be used to restore energy without saving the game.

How To Get Gold And Silver-Quality Ingredients

Having quality ingredients makes all the difference, but Graveyard Keeper is notoriously tight-lipped when it comes to telling players what to do. Thankfully, getting quality ingredients isn't as daunting as it may seem.

  • After plenty of trades with the farmer south of the cornfield, tiers 2 and 3 of his shop provide silver-quality seeds and vegetables.
  • After unlocking farms, planting silver-quality seeds has a chance of yielding gold-quality seeds and crops.
  • Crafting fertilizer at the church workbench greatly increases the chances of higher quality crop yields.

When Is Gold-Quality Food Needed?

Gold-Quality food and drink are required at several points of Graveyard Keeper's various NPC quest lines, such as:

  • A gold-quality Mug of Beer is required to unlock the Mug of Mead recipe.
  • 5 gold-quality Dinners are required as part of the Merchant's quest line; using the save trick mentioned earlier is highly recommended.
  • One gold-quality pumpkin is required for the Golden Pumpkin trophy/achievement.
  • One gold-quality wine is required for the Winemaker trophy/achievement.
  • 5 gold-quality burgers and 10 gold-quality mugs of beer are required as part of the Inquisitor's quest line.
  • In the Stranger Sins DLC, high-quality food and drink increase the tavern's rating significantly.

Graveyard Keeper is available on Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
