Grand Theft Auto 5 Details Leaked

Ever since its announcement late last year there has been little concrete story and character information released for Grand Theft Auto V, other than what has been gathered from the initial trailer. Today we have what could be new details about the main protagonist and gameplay mechanics. This information shouldn't be taken as concrete however, as it was posted by an anonymous person claiming to be a friend of a disgruntled ex-Rockstar employee. And you know how that can go.

The first bit of info is on the main characters. Grand Theft Auto V's protagonist is apparently Albert De Silva, a man who was part of a Vice City crime family. In the GTAV announcement trailer, this character claimed to want a better life for himself and his family and this rumor adds credence to our theories that were scoffed at back in November. What is new is that one member of his family is named Kevin, and get this, he likes first person shooters. It will be interesting to see what Rockstar calls their faux Call of Duty title — if any of this info is true that is.

The GTA games have evolved to become more grounded in reality over the years, and if these rumors hold true, then GTA V will be the most realistic yet. One of the bits of information leaked is that cops will now chase players if you are clearly breaking the speed limit, a feature oddly completely missing in the last game.

As for the size of the game, the map of GTA V is rumored to be five times as large as Liberty City in GTA IV. Anyone who played San Andreas knows that it was the largest GTA at the time, with many highways connecting the main areas. With these highways, it would make sense that there would be a highway patrol in place to catch those reckless speeders.

The source also claimed that GTA V will have multiplayer with up to 32 players on PS3 and Xbox 360, but there's no word on PC or the possible (and previously rumored) Wii U version. There was also mention of a gang system, very similar to recently confirmed 'Crews' of Max Payne 3. It was said this Crews system would be integrated in to GTA V, but no further details were given. Other details include:

  • Players will be able to customize weapons and cars (Saints Row: The Third!).
  • Planes can be flown, including private jets and World War II fighters.
  • The player will have to avoid the cops for 24 in-game hours before losing wanted level. 72 hours for higher wanted levels.
  • The criminal underworld will have a working economy where the player can buy and sell drugs, cars and weapons.
  • Radios have working traffic reports to assist the player when navigating the city.

This information was originally posted on the Gamespot forums and later taken down, making all of this very suspicious and a lot more believable. Thanks to the magic of the internet the posting was cached and can be found at this link, including the information of Rockstar having a playable demo at E3 2012.

Game Rant will have boots — actually sneakers and other comfortable footwear — on the ground at E3 this year to bring you the latest on this title.

Grand Theft Auto V is expected to launch for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U and PC in 2012.
