Ever since it began life in 1997 as a top-down crime simulator, the Grand Theft Auto series has gone down as one of the most lucrative in video game history. The third installment in the franchise helped usher in a new era of 3D open world exploration, and since then each subsequent installment has only increased Rockstar's portfolio as the years have gone by. With the Grand Theft Auto: Trilogy - Definitive Edition due for release soon, fans will be able to relive those early 2000 classics in a more modern gaming epoch. With that, it has recently been announced how much storage the game will require for those playing on the Nintendo Switch.

According to the Nintendo eShop, it seems as though the Grand Theft Auto remasters will need just over 25 GB of storage on the hybrid console. This is significantly more than the PC port of the GTA titles which require 45 GB of hard drive space. The Xbox version will require even more, 49 GB in total, according to official sources. There doesn't seem to be any indication as to why the Switch port is managing to take up 20 GB less hard drive space than other versions.

As if playing these remastered classics on the go wasn't enough, the upcoming GTA Definitive Edition will also have exclusive features for the Switch. While the Nintendo port will include the GTA 5-style control scheme that’s available in other iterations of the game, it will also come with optional gyro aiming controls, according to Rockstar. On top of that, players will also have motion control support, in which it will be possible to use the device's touch screen to zoom in and make menu selections.

There's no denying that remasters of these beloved Grand Theft Auto games is something that fans have been clamoring for for many years now. Those who fondly remember when these games first hit the shelves, each bringing a different story, setting, and overall flavor into the franchise, will get to relive those experiences again, just in a somewhat more visually advanced way. It also means those who missed out during these moments will get to see what all the fuss was about.

The shift from 2D to 3D worlds in the GTA games is likely what really set them apart from the original games of the late 1990s. Although the first game generated a huge amount of negative press coverage, with its depictions of violence, carjacking, and general mayhem, the newer titles helped take advantage of emerging gaming technologies at the time, as well as help the series be taken more seriously.

Grand Theft Auto: Trilogy - Definitive Edition launches digitally for the PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X on November 11. The physical edition is set to release on December 7th.
