Grand Theft Auto is a series beloved by many, and despite the ever advancing march forward of the crime simulator, some fans have voiced their desires for remakes and remasters of older titles. Fans might be in luck, as the South Korean ratings board just leaked a new Grand Theft Auto project that many fans have demanded for years.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy was just leaked by the South Korean ratings board. The collection is also listed as Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition, leaving fans speculating as to what that could mean. While some fans were hopeful for a full remake of the classic sandbox titles, it seems far more likely to be a remaster for current-gen hardware. With Grand Theft Auto 6 only being teased, this new remaster will have to satisfy fans for a while.

Twitter user Nibel posted a screenshot of the leak, as well as engaged with commenters to clarify as much as they could. According to one user in the thread, the “definitive edition” simply means the collection is “basically remasters” with a “mix of old and new graphics.” Reportedly, the game’s developers are using Unreal Engine 4 for graphical updates. That user went on to say that according to sources, Rockstar wants “the gameplay to feel as close to the original as possible.” Classic Grand Theft Auto looks great with mods already, and many fans are no doubt eager to see what Rockstar's personal touch can add to the trilogy.

The remaster not only sparked excitement over the Grand Theft Auto series, but also another Rockstar property. A commenter expressed hope that a remaster of this trilogy could be a sign of increased likelihood for a Red Dead Redemption remaster somewhere down the line. This is still only hope and speculation at this time, but many other fans in the thread shared similar optimism. After all, Red Dead Redemption has set a high bar for Grand Theft Auto moving forward.

Grand Theft Auto is in hot water right now, and the leak of this trilogy remaster may be just what fans need to retain some faith in the franchise. While a few graphical upgrades may not be enough to satisfy long-time fans, it may be enough to peak interest in new fans of the series. Some Grand Theft Auto titles are difficult to access for certain new fans, and a remaster like this may be able to provide those fans with some series history.

Grand Theft Auto 6 isn’t coming anytime soon, and simply throwing fans a newer remaster of older titles is not going to cover that fact. Grand Theft Auto 5 is 8 years old and is about to see life on its third generation of consoles. On top of that, a Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy already exists on older consoles. But making games more easily accessible to a greater number of players is almost always a win, and there is a reason that some players have asked for a remaster of the classic trilogy.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy has not been officially announced at the time of this writing.
