When Grand Theft Auto 5 released in 2013, it came bundled with Grand Theft Auto Online. Though there were many technical problems at launch, fixes and constant updates turned the multiplayer aspect into as big of a draw as the single-player experience. But while fans are still waiting for a potential GTA 6 in the future, recent news confirms that GTA Online is moving into the next generation of gaming.

GTA Online still takes place in Los Santos, but the player's self-insert character undertakes missions and stories largely absent from those of Franklin, Michael, and Trevor. Although the initial timeline was set months before the events of the GTA 5, later DLC have the protagonist and their friends rampage through heists, kidnappings, and other larger-than-life situations at the request of various characters from the single-player story. These later updates have been positively received and it seems more Online content is on the way.

As revealed by Rockstar's parent company, Take Two Interactive, GTA Online will get exclusive content when it arrives on the PS5 and Xbox Series X that PC users will also receive. This follows a previous announcement that GTA 5 and an entirely separate GTA Online will be ported over in 2021. With that in mind, these new console ports should have many graphical upgrades and gameplay improvements that make the world more immersive than ever.

The current schedule means players won't be able to experience this standalone version of GTA Online until the second half of 2021. However, the news shows Rockstar is confident that the continuing legacy of the original GTA 5 and Online means that the next-gen ports will be just as successful especially with the increased number of people staying at home currently. While no further details were revealed, fans can anticipate more heists similar to recent DLC during 2019.

GTA Online fixes money hacks

Since GTA 5's confirmation for the PS5 and Xbox Series X, it was inevitable that the Online component would need to bring something new besides an even better look. While new missions and in-game cosmetics seem reasonable, perhaps more characters from the main story will finally make an appearance or cameo. Although it may be wishful thinking, players could finally see Franklin, Michael, and Trevor together again especially since Ending C was confirmed to be canon.

For now, GTA Online players can look forward to a Summer update coming soon with more heists in unexplored places. Additionally, PS Plus subscribers will receive $1 million dollars every month they play until the PS5 version launches with a free download for the first 3 months.

GTA Online is available now on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, and will release on PS5 and Xbox Series X in 2021.
