Take Two CEO Reveals Why There Hasn't Been A Grand Theft Auto Movie

Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick reveals why a Grand Theft Auto movie hasn't been made. GTA is one of the most popular game series around and has made billions of dollars and so some fans have found it strange that a movie about its characters hasn't been created.

Speaking to The Wrap, Zelnick explains that if Take Two and Rockstar Games were to make a GTA movie, "we’d want to have complete creative control to make sure we expressed it the way we wanted." However, if they are to have control over the film, they'd also have to finance it. The way that GTA 5 has been selling means that Take Two and Rockstar have the money but "we don’t have the corporate expertise to do it." Only a few people at Take Two have experience in the movie business.

Fans of the GTA series may be disappointed hearing what Zelnick has to say.The GTA series has so many great characters that fans would enjoy seeing on screen. A film about GTA 5 would offer more of Trevor's wild behavior, more of Michael's family issues, and more of Franklin and his dog. The popularity of other heist movies, such as the Ocean's series and Widows also means that there are probably thousands of movie fans who would buy tickets, not knowing anything about GTA.

However, many can understand where Zelnick is coming from. Video game films don't have the greatest reputation and to make sure that a GTA movie doesn't do badly, Take Two and Rockstar would have to help make it. The Sonic the Hedgehog movie was criticized for its Sonic design and the Sonic redesign was also criticized by the game's creator. It's not easy to make everyone happy with such a large series like GTA.

There is a way to do it well and films such as Detective Pikachu did well at the box office. Detective Pikachu was created by Legendary Entertainment and The Pokemon Company and many fans really enjoyed it. Take Two and Rockstar would have to try very hard to find a production company that would allow it to have control over the film and that won't be easy. It seems like a GTA movie is unlikely to happen in the next few years but if Rockstar can create a great story with GTA 6, fans may just forget that there isn't a GTA movie.
