Rockstar Games has been teasing a big update for Grand Theft Auto Online, the online multiplayer mode tied to the ever-popular Grand Theft Auto 5. After weeks of GTA Online teases, Rockstar has finally pulled the curtain back, revealing exactly what fans can expect from the game's next big update.

Rockstar Games has officially announced the Cayo Perico Heist for Grand Theft Auto Online. Described as the "biggest, most daring, and action-packed" content update for GTA Online to date, the Cayo Perico Heist will see players visit the private island of Cayo Perico, marking the first major new location added to the game since its launch all the way back in 2013. The goal of the Cayo Perico Heist will be to infiltrate the compound of a drug dealer, who has a "heavily armed" security force to protect his assets.

Besides giving Grand Theft Auto Online players a new heist to complete and a new location to explore, fans can also look forward to some quality-of-life changes. For instance, the new GTA Online update will design the heist so that it can be realistically completed with a single person and not require a full squad. This is huge for those who want to experience the game's heists but may have difficulty putting a full squad together.

Beyond that, this next big GTA Online update will also add new vehicles, weapons, and more. Players will be able to access a submarine HQ, listen to "world-class guest DJs," and check out over 100 new songs that are being added alongside some new radio stations. Needless to say, Rockstar Games isn't exaggerating when it says that the Cayo Perico Heist will be the biggest update for Grand Theft Auto Online to date.

Luckily, Grand Theft Auto Online fans don't have to wait long to visit Cayo Perico and try the new heist. The Grand Theft Auto Online: Cayo Perico Heist release date is December 15, so the new content is coming in just a matter of weeks. In the meantime, GTA Online fans will notice dead bodies washing up on the shores of Los Santos, hinting at the dangers that lie ahead for them on the island.

Fans can look forward to Rockstar Games continuing to support Grand Theft Auto Online for the foreseeable future. Grand Theft Auto 5 and GTA Online are coming to next-gen consoles in 2021, and while some fans may be anxious to play Grand Theft Auto 6, at least they will be able to enjoy some kind of GTA experience on the new consoles before too long.

Grand Theft Auto Online is out now for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
