Some Rockstar Games fans hoped the new year would begin with an announcement about Grand Theft Auto 6. After rumors started swirling towards the end of 2020, some in the community thought a release date for Grand Theft Auto 6 might be just around the corner. However, one insider recently shot down those rumors, saying a release date isn't imminent.

It's been speculated for a while now that Grand Theft Auto 6 is in the works. Some who claim to have spoken to Rockstar employees have said for a while now that the company wants to bring a new GTA to the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Despite the lack of any official announcement from the firm itself, there are insiders who continue swearing the new entry in the long-running series is on the horizon. At issue is just how far away the horizon is, in reality.

Former Rockstar Games insider and Twitter user Yann2295 is looked at by the GTA community as a voice that should be listened to when it comes to whether a game is in development and when it's coming. On January 2, he took to social media to shoot down the rumors that Grand Theft Auto 6 is coming anytime soon. "Yes GTA 6 is being developed. No, it's not coming soon," Yann tweeted, getting right to the point. "No, I don't know when it's gonna be announced or released." The former insider appeared to be wanting to shut down requests from Twitter users for him to weigh in. He closed the tweet out by telling his nearly 80,000 followers they could stop asking him about it "now."

The consensus among the Grand Theft Auto community of insiders and leakers is that a new game is in the works. There's very little debate about that at this point. What is in dispute is how far along it is and how long Rockstar has worked on Grand Theft Auto 6. Some have pointed out that the company is still focusing more on GTA Online than a new title. When the PlayStation 5 was officially unveiled last year, Grand Theft Auto 5 was chief among the existing games that promised a next-gen upgrade.

Despite Rockstar publicly focusing on GTA 5 and Grand Theft Auto Online, data miners continue finding clues about Grand Theft Auto 6. There are even some in the community who think those clues are pointing towards a tie-in with Red Dead Redemption 2.

If Yann is correct in saying that Grand Theft Auto 6 is still quite a ways off, Rockstar's fans have a long wait to know what's going into the next game in the popular series. Some around the community believe it might even be 2022 before there's any kind of official word on the title's development.
