Rockstar Games has always been a master of hype. After all, all it took for the company to light the internet on fire in 2016 was a change of the company’s Twitter logo from yellow to red (for Red Dead Redemption 2). No one’s challenging the idea that Rockstar has plans to break the internet again with a Grand Theft Auto 6 announcement at some point, but many are conflicted when it comes to figuring out when Rockstar will finally show its hand. Although GTA 6 rumors have been swirling for years now, recent rumor-mongers have posited that March 2020 will finally be the month when Rockstar reveals all.

Released in 2013, GTA 5 is somewhat of an anomaly for the franchise. It’s true that every title in the series has seen massive success starting with GTA 3 in 2001, but GTA 5’s online mode, GTA Online, has made the game the third best selling video game of all time, with over 120 million units sold. That is way more than GTA 4 (the second best selling GTA game) which sold over 25 million units, meaning Rockstar is likely to change its strategy up for Grand Theft Auto 6.

GTAForums Leaker

A user who goes by the name of gonnaenodaethat has been posting cryptic messages on the forum site regarding news on GTA 6. which has subsequently caused a bunch of speculation on both that site and Reddit. Most notably, the user started a post that was called 0320, and immediately, people started to assume that this is the reveal date (March 20) for GTA 6 and that Rockstar fans should have all hands on deck for an imminent announcement. A Reddit thread on the matter compiled a few reasons as to why some believe the cryptic messages to be hints of GTA 6’s reveal date.

There are only two reasons that give the supposed leaker any credibility. First, they supposedly knew Red Dead Redemption 2 was coming to PC before it was announced. Although the original Red Dead Redemption was only released on consoles, it wasn’t a hard prediction to make that the sequel would remedy the absence of Red Dead Redemption on PC. Second and more importantly though, moderators on the forum seem to be supporting this leaker, and this is uncharacteristic of the usually strict mods that run the site. This fact alone is significant, but at the end of the day, the leaker could just be saying things that people want to hear with some solid speculation in some scenarios.

The RDR2 March 25 Leak

4chan is notorious for its abundance of video game leaks and grains of salt make up the entire bedrock of the site’s credibility. Yet, users on the site have still correctly predicted or leaked information on games in the past which is why YouTuber MrBossFTW has analyzed a particular post on the site and is curious to see it through. The supposed leaker claims that Rockstar will reveal GTA 6 on March 25, five days after the date predicted by the GTAForums user. Whether or not one or both parties are lying, it’s interesting to see that the two users have landed their predictions within one week of each other.

Other Possibilities for GTA 6

The only thing that people can be certain of at this point is that Rockstar will eventually announce Grand Theft Auto 6 at some point (which itself isn’t a guarantee, even if the chances are astronomically high). However, the chances of Rockstar announcing GTA 6 anytime soon are fairly slim. RDR 2 was just released more than a year ago, meaning the company is still probably in pre-production on its next game. Additionally, the continuing success of GTA Online could make GTA 6 take a different turn in development, as it’s possible Rockstar would want to focus on that some more. Also, with series co-creator Dan Houser leaving Rockstar, it's not clear how his departure will affect future GTA games.

Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, did hold an investors call recently in which executives teased that more games from the company’s blockbuster franchises would be coming soon, but that could mean anything as Take-Two puts out everything from Bioshock to Borderlands. It’s possible that GTA 6 could be shown off at the PS5 reveal event, which has seen rumors rise up and die down over the past few weeks. However, it’s more than likely that Rockstar will stick to revealing games on its own watch. All in all, GTA 6 probably won’t be revealed for at least another couple of years.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is rumored to be in development.
