2019 might have been another stellar year for Grand Theft Auto 5, but Rockstar Games fans are hopeful that this year might finally bring news about what's next. Nothing is confirmed, but Rockstar parent company Take-Two Interactive has teased that it may have more to say about GTA 6 in the coming months, potentially at either the PS5 or Xbox Series X reveals.
This past week, Take-Two hosted its annual investors call to discuss the past fiscal year and what's next. Both Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 enjoyed massive success over the last 12 months, with the latter cementing its place as the second best selling Rockstar release in history. Of course, RDR 2 will likely never catch Grand Theft Auto 5, which still charts in the top half of game sales on a monthly basis.
Given how successful GTA 5, and more specifically GTA Online, has been, one would expect Take-Two to ride that train for as long as possible. But at some point, Rockstar has to start thinking about GTA 6, and several rumors suggest that work has already begun on the next entry in the open world crime series.
As far as when fans might hear the words Grand Theft Auto 6, Take-Two teased that potential during the investor call. When discussing the future of the company, CEO Strauss Zelnick said that fans can expect multiple releases from the company's most significant franchises. Which franchises those might be is anyone's guess, but one has to figure that Rockstar factors into that equation in some part.
In addition to that small tease, the call also said that gamers will learn about the company's pipeline in the coming months. There are a lot of different opportunities for Take-Two to discuss new games, but one likely possibility is the PS5 reveal. Sony has yet to say anything at all about its plans for the big debut of its next console, but the expectation is that the presentation will include some third party announcements. And as far as Take-Two games are concerned, there isn't a bigger “get” than Grand Theft Auto 6.
Of course, this is pure speculation based on some careful words from a Take-Two executive. When it comes to Rockstar Games there is a lot that the studio likes to do in its own way. Red Dead Redemption 2 was announced seemingly out of the blue by way of a trailer and later a hands-on preview, and many prior Rockstar games have featured similar reveals. E3 and console presentations are not usually Rockstar's preferred venue when it comes to announcing games, but Take-Two might seize the opportunity. Still, it would be a major reveal if Sony's PS5 reveal event did feature the first look at Grand Theft Auto 6.
