Grand Theft Auto 6 has been rumored to be in development for quite some time, but has yet to be officially announced. That didn't stop Netflix France from tweeting on Tuesday that Grand Theft Auto 6 is coming soon, revealing moments later that the announcement was a cheeky joke. It was a strange turn of events that left many fans wondering why the streaming giant would have bothered pulling such an odd prank.

What makes the thread even stranger is that Netflix's social media accounts typically highlight its own shows and movies. It doesn't seem that Netflix has anything to gain by shouting out content it doesn't offer, let alone an unannounced title from an entirely different medium.

"Between today and the end of the world..."

The original tweet from Neflix France translates to "Basically, GTA 6 is coming soon." When asked how soon that would be, the account responded, "Between today and the end of the world, let's see." It was an odd exchange that didn't seem to have an obvious purpose. At best, it was another example of a corporate Twitter account taking on an impish persona in order to make the company seem more relatable.

A few replies to the tweet offer some context. "Prochainement" is a running joke from the Netflix France account, similar to Blizzard's infamous Soon™. Whenever someone asks the account when a particular film or TV show is coming out, Netflix replies, "Prochainement" if no date has been announced.

Taking this into account, the tweet seems more like a self-referential joke being made at the expense of Rockstar's unannounced sequel. Another way to translate it would be, "You know what else is 'Coming Soon?' GTA 6!" The implication is that Grand Theft Auto 6 has become this generation's Half-Life 3: Always rumored to be on the way, but never actually seeing a release.

Unfortunately, this tweet doesn't seem to be a hinting at anything new from Netflix or Rockstar. Though Netflix has produced quite a few films and TV shows based on video games, it hasn't indicated any intention to begin offering video games. If that had been the case, it would have been announced with much more fanfare than a single tweet from one of Netflix's many Twitter accounts. Considering that Grand Theft Auto 6 hasn't even been announced, it would be an odd title for Netflix to make any promises about.

Rumors surfaced last fall about a Grand Theft Auto movie that might be in development, but there has been little info since. The film would likely be a standalone title and have little to do with GTA 6. Even if it is being made, Netflix is not confirmed to be involved.

Though it would have been a relief to see more news about Grand Theft Auto 6, it seems that this was simply a case of a joke getting lost in translation. It's sad to think that Rockstar's silence might have turned the sequel into a punchline, but hopefully more information about the long-awaited title will be available soon.
