It seems that, every other week, there’s a new map for Grand Theft Auto 6 “leaked” online. Of course, some of these rumors last longer than others, like the long-discussed GTA 6 Project Americas map, but these are often fake. Many make them up because, for one reason or another, Rockstar Games’ maps have legitimately leaked in the past.

This often leads to debate over where the game is set: South America, Vice City, or other assorted locations. While this is interesting, of course, Grand Theft Auto 6’s release date is so far away that it’s just one of many mysteries about the game. It’s not even the biggest with the most possibilities, as that belongs to how Grand Theft Auto 6 treats its protagonist and who they are.

Grand Theft Auto 5 made it a big mystery by introducing one of the most refreshing features in the franchises: multiple protagonists. Each was unique, offered fresh perspectives, and had unique personalities: Michael, who was the Mafia-esque leading man; Trevor, who was a genuine psychopath; and Franklin, who was essentially their protege, climbing the underworld ladder.

Grand Theft Auto 6 Protagonist Rumors and Possibilities

It’s not impossible Grand Theft Auto 6 returns to a single protagonist, but due to the success of the aforementioned trio, it doesn’t seem like the likeliest possibilty. Some have debated or “leaked” that it would be a duo this time around, ranging from a man and woman in a Bonnie and Clyde scenario to a police officer and a gangster. Working together or against each other would make for an interesting game, no matter how the duo appeared.

Then, of course, there’s the potential return of the three protagonists like Grand Theft Auto 5. GTA 6 could take it even further with four as some part of group protagonists, but that would likely be pushing it. The very fact that the number of protagonists is a question mark means that the story could go in any number of directions. At the same time, it isn’t just a question of numbers either.

Many have called for Grand Theft Auto 6 to feature a female protagonist, which isn’t something Rockstar has historically done much. Or, because it is becoming increasingly more prominent, it’s possible Rockstar allows players to make their own GTA 6 protagonist—or at least one of them. In a way, they could be Franklin and play alongside whatever other protagonists Rockstar designed.

At the end of the day, there are so many possible routes that it really is the biggest mystery about the game. It’s not the only, but it is the biggest, perhaps even most interesting. The only thing that seems to be a given for Grand Theft Auto 6 is its success, as Rockstar’s reputation and still sales-chart topping Grand Theft Auto 5 pave the way for it.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is reportedly in development.
