It was a serious break from tradition when Grand Theft Auto 5 featured multiple protagonists and one that was definitely well-received. This non-traditional approach is something that the RDR2 and GTA 5 developer Rockstar Games has a history of actively embracing, as the company frequently changes up its game-making formula. And according to a recent rumor circulating online, Grand Theft Auto 6 could be breaking tradition by becoming the first game in the franchise to feature a playable female protagonist.

As with all rumors, this tidbit of Grand Theft Auto 6 information should be taken with a healthy dose of salt. The origin of this rumor appears to be a video by The Know from a few years back and has since re-surfaced online. It re-appearing now isn't that surprising, especially given the current conditions of the rumor mill for GTA 6.

For the past few months, there have been plenty of Grand Theft Auto 6 rumors that supposedly revealed its release date, that it was a PS5-timed exclusive, that it will feature Liberty City and Vice City, and there was even a recent leak of details for GTA 6 Online. But returning to the rumor at hand and accepting it as a possibility, there are still a few things that wouldn't be known.

For example, this rumor begs the question of how many protagonists could appear in GTA 6. GTA 5 featured the gangster Franklin, the Mafia-like Michael, and the criminally insane Trevor. It's possible that Grand Theft Auto 6 follows a similar set-up, and if that is the case, then the likelihood of at least one of the protagonists being female increases. If there actually was only one protagonist, nothing is stopping them from being a woman, but we don't yet know her name or any defining characteristics.

A female lead in Grand Theft Auto 6 would definitely be interesting, and many would argue that it's about time. And considering the rumored 2020 release date, it seems possible this would be confirmed sooner rather than later.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is rumored to be in development for unspecified platforms.
