Grand Theft Auto 5 is one of those rare game that keeps selling for far longer and far more than anyone could possibly anticipate. Three years ago, GTA 5 became the most profitable entertainment product of all time, but the success has not stopped there. It has been revealed that GTA 5 was the third-best-selling game in the United Kingdom for the entire year of 2020.

Even more impressive is that Grand Theft Auto 5 performed that well in a year where two next-generation consoles launched, and the updated version of GTA 5 for the PS5 and Xbox Series consoles isn’t expected to release for at least another several months. 2020 also saw a record number of people playing games, as many were stuck at home for much of the year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning even more people who may have missed the phenomenon in the past 7 years were given an excuse to catch up.

REALTED: Steam Had Its Biggest Christmas Day Ever This Year

According to a report from the UK’s Entertainment Retailers Association, Grand Theft Auto 5 sold 1,127,22 units in 2020, coming in third following Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and FIFA 21. The game also beat out other incredibly popular games for 2020, including the phenomenon of Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Game of the Year Winner The Last of Us Part 2. It should be noted, however, that Animal Crossing’s listing does not include digital Nintendo eShop sales, and the game released during the peak of COVID-19 lockdowns in the UK.

The report also states that video games brought in more revenue than video or music sales, but it should of course be noted that streaming services like Netflix and Spotify are not being taken into account. The FIFA 21, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and GTA 5 all sold more than the number 1 movie, Frozen 2, though Frozen 2 is available on the incredibly popular Disney Plus streaming platform.

GTA 5’s massive success is due to Rockstar Games’ continued support of GTA Online, with regular and massive content updates of new missions, vehicles, weapons, radio stations, and more, all of which comes free with the option to spend money on microtransactions.

Just recently, Rockstar Grand Theft Auto Online’s largest update in the game’s nearly 8-year history with the Cayo Perico Heist. The update released at the end of last month, and added all of the above listed content, in addition to a new land mass, but it is only explorable during missions, unless players use a new exploit to free-roam Cayo Perico.
