Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto franchise is no stranger to mods, as many GTA games have received them, and they never seem to stop coming either: even 2002's Vice City is receiving mods 18 years later. And while it certainly isn’t the first graphical mod for the game, a new mod for Grand Theft Auto 5 gives the game a fresh coat of paint.

There have been more than a few mods for the visuals of Grand Theft Auto 5, including NaturalVision Evolved from modder Razed, which also utilizes ray-tracing for a global illumination effect. But while this new mod might use similar technological techniques, the end result is quite a different look.

A modder by the name of OreoShaman released a trailer for the visual overhaul mod, and it has already garnered over a million views. Called Realism Beyond, the mod utilizes features like ray-tracing and ambient occlusion to give a much more rich and realistic lighting model to the city of Los Santos than it had when Rockstar first released GTA5 back in 2013. The amazing visuals on display in the demonstration videos from OreoShaman are captured on a PC rig featuring an Intel i5-8400, 32GB of RAM, and an RTX 2080 Ti, which means those who pick up an RTX 3070 can expect similar results, though the card will likely be difficult to get ahold of.

The mod gives Grand Theft Auto 5 a much softer, more evenly lit environment that is perhaps a bit more stylized than the straight realism from NaturalVision. Both are massive improvements over the game’s original look, but it might come down to a matter of personal preference if someone wanted to mod the visuals of their game. Those who want to use OreoShaman’s Realism Beyond can access the now complete mod by supporting them on Patreon.

Those who are looking more for mods more so in the gameplay department and are looking forward to Watch Dogs Legion later this month might enjoy JulioNIB’s mod that brings all the hacking fun of being a vigilante hacker to Los Santos.

Even though Grand Theft Auto 6 is still likely years away from release, there are more than enough mods for GTAV that the fun will truly never end for many. Those who are looking to pair the new realistic graphics of OreoShaman’s beautiful work might like to turn GTA5 into more of a life sim with mods that make gunplay and driving more realistic as well.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. PS5 and Xbox Series X versions are in development.
