What Platforms Will 'Grand Theft Auto 5' Release On?

Rockstar Games has been developing it for years but we don't when 'Grand Theft Auto 5' is coming, so let's talk about where it may come to instead.

Next week one of the most anticipated games ever will be unveiled to the world. We're talking about the long-awaited Grand Theft Auto V, with the "V" of course meaning "Five," as in the number 5 as the game's mysterious logo clarifies. Rockstar Games officially announced the game we all knew was in development on their website earlier this week and with it, a countdown timer leading to November 2nd where the first Grand Theft Auto 5 trailer will be shown.

We don't know when the game will release, or even what platforms it will be available on. All we know is that it's been in development for a long time and for Nintendo's sake, we have wanted it to be a launch title on the Wii U since before E3 2011. This isn't stopping some retailers from already putting up GTAV pre-order pages.

Amazon is stealing an incredibly annoying trick from GameStop's book where they attempt to bring in potential consumers and publicity by putting up unofficial/early/false information on their site for games that aren't even announced yet.

In this case, Amazon already has pre-order pages up for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game, using unofficial box logo art and offering absolutely no information... Of course, there are plenty of links to games in the "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought" section - strange considering no one's "bought" Grand Theft Auto 5 yet.

Questionable business practices aside, this does give rise to a discussion on what platforms Grand Theft Auto 5 is being developed for. If it's being presented next week, it's absolutely coming to the current-generation consoles (PS3/Xbox 360) but whether it's coming to PC and the Nintendo Wii U as well remains another question. W

With the buzz around PC gaming thanks to Battlefield 3, World of Warfcraft, StarCraft 2, RAGE and the upcoming Star Wars: The Old Republic, we'd love to see GTAV get treatment on the most powerful platform of all, but like L.A. Noire it could be a while - if it happens at all.

As for the Wii U, we listed it as what would be the greatest surprise announcement at E3 this summer, but Nintendo came out with few details and confirmations on their new console and Rockstar didn't come at all. If Nintendo truly wants the "hardcore" back with the Wii successor - Grand Theft Auto 5 is the way to go.

Rumor has it that GTAV will be set on Los Angeles and while Take-Two Interactive enjoys an increase in stock value with news of the game, we've been speculating on the graphics Grand Theft Auto 5 may offer.
