The Xbox Series X/S and PS5 upgrades for Grand Theft Auto 5 are almost here but some fans of the Rockstar Games title are more than a little annoyed at how much the new version is going to cost. Fans have been expressing their anger over the price of the newest version of GTA 5 with some wondering why they're paying anything at all.
Charging money for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S upgrades of existing games has long been a point of strife in the gaming community. People also haven't been happy to pay an extra $10 for the upgraded version of new games. This also isn't the first controversy that's surrounded the upcoming version of GTA 5. While the general public is not a fan of the price point for the upcoming edition, it appears that Rockstar Games is moving straight ahead with its plan.
Of course, the MSRP for the new generation Grand Theft Auto 5 versions haven't been made official yet, even though it's just a week away from release. The full price for these new editions have leaked however and according to Twitter user Okami Games, both the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions will eventually cost $39.99 and will include Grand Theft Auto Online. Meanwhile, the standalone GTA Online will cost $9.99 on the Xbox and will be free on the PS5 for the first three months. The story mode can also be purchased separately and will also cost around $10 on its own.
The price increase might catch some users by surprise considering that both versions of the full game is currently discounted to $20 but will reportedly go up to its nearly $40 price tag in June. The realization that that game is currently charging $20 despite it just being a new-gen upgrade and that it's going to get even more expensive this summer caused several people in the community to voice their displeasure.
"It should be a free next upgrade like Cyperpunk 2077," one user wrote. "I am not buying a game I already own." When another fan responded that people should support the developer, another Twitter user asked if they meant the multi-million dollar company that is Rockstar Games.
Other fans had similar sentiments about Grand Theft Auto 5 and the idea that they are going to be spending more money on what is essentially a patch. While these sorts of upgrades have cost some money on other games, what Rockstar is charging for its title stands out from the crowd.
Grand Theft Auto 5 is available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and will be coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on March 15.
