Grand Theft Auto 5 remains one of the most popular games in the world, in no small part due to the ongoing success of its multiplayer half Grand Theft Auto Online. Soon Grand Theft Auto 5 will be able to reach even more potential players, with a tentative release window of March. That may no longer be the case, however. A leaker claims to have heard that Grand Theft Auto 5's next-gen development has hit a hitch and an additional delay could be forthcoming.

The report comes from a Brazilian leaker named Matheusbr, who shared what they'd heard on Twitter. According to Matheusbr, the development of Grand Theft Auto 5: Expanded and Enhanced for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S has been "complicated." As a result, there's a "great" possibility that Grand Theft Auto 5's next-gen ports will be delayed out of March. They won't be delayed substantially, however. Matheusbr says they're likely to be released in April or May, instead.

To be clear, this report has not been corroborated. Matheusbr did not provide sources for their information and it isn't clear what their reputation is for this kind of leak. Rumors regarding Grand Theft Auto are rife and rarely reliable. It would be best if Grand Theft Auto fans took this leak with a grain of salt, at least until Rockstar makes another official statement about Grand Theft Auto 5: Expanded and Enhanced's upcoming release.

With that said, a delay to April or May for Grand Theft Auto 5 for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S isn't by any means outside the realm of possibility. That's because Grand Theft Auto 5: Expanded and Enhanced is already being released way beyond all expectations. The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S have been available for well over a year, showing Rockstar isn't exactly prioritizing a quick launch. It has also been delayed before, showing Rockstar is comfortable pushing the game back.

Grand Theft Auto fans are more than welcome to criticize the situation, of course. Grand Theft Auto 5 has been available since September 2013. It's already been ported from PS3 and Xbox 360 to PS4 and Xbox One, not to mention PC. Why it has been so difficult to bring Grand Theft Auto 5 to the new generation of consoles is a question likely without an answer that players would appreciate.

Regardless, with just a couple of months left before the tentative release of Grand Theft Auto 5, more information should be forthcoming from Rockstar soon. That means that, whether it's a confirmation of a March release or a delay beyond, Rockstar should confirm this leak's veracity before long.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is available now on PS4, PC, and Xbox One, with a release on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S planned for March.
