Late last year, we were treated to several funny instances of NPCs gone wild thanks in large parts to the shortcomings of Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Unity. There were disappearing faces, citizens stuck in walls, and my personal favorite, this cutscene getting interrupted by a group of yapping NPCs.
Typically, when a game doesn't work as intended that's cause for disappointment (read: Halo: Master Chief Collection), but this is a little different. Sometimes things just go a little wonky and rather than throw our controller in anger we know say “Xbox, record that.” Without such a feature, we wouldn't have silly videos like this.
In a very similar vein, we bring another cutscene gone awry, only this one is from Grand Theft Auto 5. However, while the Assassin's Creed scene featured a couple loud French citizens, this one packs a lot more firepower. See the video above.
While it's unclear what exactly triggers the situation, it's no less entertaining. Our guess is that the Los Santos police were in hot pursuit when the player entered a cutscene. But rather than wait patiently for Michael to finish his business, the cops decided to keep trying to bring him down.
Normally, the scene between Michael and Trevor would play out in typical Rockstar Games fashion, with the two lead characters bickering over past grievances. The two would then go their separate ways and the Los Santos cops would disappear. For this player, though, the cops had other ideas.
This isn't the first time that we've seen the cops of Grand Theft Auto show off super human powers, and it likely isn't the last either. Just take a look at this Terminator cop's attempts to bring down a fleeing suspect here.
So, the major through line here seems to be that open world games can sometimes have a hard time controlling their NPCs. Sometimes it may be a group of gossipy pedestrians or in this case determined cops, but it's not out of the ordinary to see game A.I. Run wild. And usually when it happens, it's hilarious.
Have you seen anything out of the ordinary in Grand Theft Auto 5? What is your favorite instance of NPCs gone crazy?
