In a recent report from Take-Two Interactive, the renowned parent company of Rockstar Games announced that Grand Theft Auto 5 is reaching new heights of popularity, as the open-world action game has now sold enough copies to be branded the best-selling video game of all time in the United States. The title has shipped 85 million units worldwide as of this new report, a figure that has increased by 10 million units since Take-Two's announcement back in 2016.

Now that Grand Theft Auto 5 has reached the 85 million mark, the game has surpassed previous record-holder Wii Sports, which was previously the most successful US title with 82.83 million units sold in total. Of course, since the title was primarily available through a package deal with the Nintendo Wii console, Wii Sports' success might have come down to a technicality but there is no longer any debate about the United States' best-selling game.

Take-Two also took the time to mention GTA Online's tremendous success, reporting that the multiplayer experience has its best quarter yet in terms of revenue. Although the company didn't specify just how much the online mode was adding to GTA V's significant profit margins, we have seen in the past that GTA Online is still making bank for the publisher and the fan-base doesn't seem to be decreasing any time soon.

Considering that Grand Theft Auto 5 generated more than $800 million in worldwide revenue within 24 hours of its release, it's hardly surprising that the game went on to become the most successful US video game of all time. A title that has rarely left the list of weekly best-sellers, GTA V fully eclipsed the cost of making the game in the first place within hours of the original launch four years ago.

With Rockstar Games' latest project, a sequel to Red Dead Redemption, just over the horizon, gamers are eager to see what the developer has in store for us this time round. One thing's almost certain though - the game will be hugely profitable once more - though it's hard to say whether the hype for the open-world western title can surpass that of GTA V back in 2013. Seeing as microtransactions are confirmed for Red Dead Redemption 2, Take-Two can rest easy knowing that its bank account is soon going to be more full than it has ever been.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is out now for PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
