Classic Grand Theft Auto games have been on the minds of many lately, as rumors of a Grand Theft Auto remastered trilogy begin to swirl and Grand Theft Auto Online continues to get content updates. One fan has captured this energy perfectly, remaking Grand Theft Auto 2’s trailer in Grand Theft Auto 5, the most recent entry in the series.

Over on YouTube, ARazenX uploaded a video of a near-perfect recreation of Grand Theft Auto 2’s 8-minute trailer from the 90s. The original trailer was an FMV, so capturing some of the animations, special effects, and complicated sequences was likely quite the time investment. However, these elements were captured faithfully, all the way down to a custom skin of GTA 2 character Claude Speed.

What the recreation really captures, though, is how much the series has evolved since its humble beginnings. Grand Theft Auto 2 and Grand Theft Auto 5 are wildly different games, though the high octane chases found in the first two entries live on today. Everything else has been radically overhauled, though, moving from a top-down 2D camera angle to full 3D environments over the last twenty years. The basic DNA is still there, but it almost isn’t recognizable anymore.

Grand Theft Auto 5 has been home to a number of impressive fan creations and recreations, earning itself a spot as one of the most culturally influential games out there. Even iconic moments from the game have been recreated in real life, the most notable being when Franklin’s and Lamar’s actors recreated Grand Theft Auto 5’s roast scene. The recreation was inspired by a meme, in which other characters were dropped into the scene, like DOOM Guy or Darth Vader.

Undoubtedly, more fan creations will pop up between now and when Grand Theft Auto 6 releases. The next entry in the franchise has been speculated on, but fans have seen nothing tangible about it thus far. Rumors of when Grand Theft Auto 6 will release have painted a blurry picture, with some believing the game is imminent while the more realistic answer seems to be that it’s years away.

Until fans learn more about Grand Theft Auto 6, they’ll have to keep exploring what GTA 5 has to offer. While they’ve been playing for nearly a decade now, the Online element still has plenty for fans to do, so it’s worth checking out for those that are hungry for chaos.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
