It’s been some time since Gran Turismo 5 was the center of any major news (aside from the impending release of Gran Turismo 5: Spec II). But that is about to change, thanks to an upcoming visit from an old classic made new.
Just days after being unveiled at the North American International Auto Show, the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette C7 Stingray is on its way to Gran Turismo 5 via DLC. It will be some time before car enthusiasts can get behind the wheel of the actual Stingray for a test drive, but a digital excursion will be coming free of charge to GT5 players this Tuesday, January 15.
Announced via the PlayStation Blog, the exclusive DLC (sorry, fans of Forza Motorsport) marks the continued cooperation between Chevrolet and Polyphony Digital after the success of the game’s C7 Prototype among players. Not every racing enthusiast will be satisfied by limiting their time with the new C7 to merely pixels and a controller, but with the amount of Gran Turismo 5 players out there, plenty will be pleased by this announcement.
Any opportunity to test-drive the C7 is welcome at this point, to see not only how it looks up close, but how it handles as compared to previous models. From its first unveiling, the inspiration taken from existing supercars was apparent (the designers clearly appreciate a good vent), not to mention somewhat divisive among Chevrolet’s most devoted fans.
While it’s easy to pick out the reflections of the Nissan GT-R, Lexus LFA and others, judging how well those design choices mesh with the unmistakably-Chevy front end will need to be reserved until we can see the car in action. Through GT5 DLC may not be exactly what we had in mind, but it’s better than nothing.
If you’ve yet to lay your eyes on the new Stingray, or are simply curious as to how well Polyphony has captured its look and feel, have a look at the first screenshots:
For gamers, there’s no better time to return to old favorites than the lull of early January, so fans of Gran Turismo 5‘s undeniably-refined racing model (ourselves included) have yet another perfectly good excuse to return to the track. Not just for the ’14 Stingray, but in the event that they’d moved on before Polyphony’s sweeping updates and patches greatly improved the basic game.
For the gearheads and amateur racers out there, the Stingray DLC is an opportunity to get to know the ins and outs of the new model, from its handling down to the 7-speed shift schedule. If you’re just a fan of vents, grills and incredibly detailed interiors…well, there’s something here for you too too.
Gran Turismo 5‘s 2014 Corvette Stingray DLC is available for free through the PlayStation Store on Tuesday, January 13.
