GR Pick: 8-Bit 'Assassin's Creed'

Ever wished you could what the 'Assassin's Creed' series would look like had it been created during the 8-bit generation? Now's your chance in today's GR Pick.

Despite a ton of talk recently over graphical supremacy, it’s tough to beat the look and feel of a classic 8 or 16-bit title. Though they might not carry the same impressive visuals as today’s titles, what they lack in crispness, they more than make up for in clever design. It really makes you wonder what some series might look like using 8-bit graphics.

While we were given a brief hint of what the Assassin’s Creed series could have liked like in the 16-bit era during Ubisoft’s E3 press conference, one dedicated filmmaker has given gamers an even more detailed version of Ezio’s adventure, but this time using 8-bit graphics.

Giving a brief summation of the Assassin’s Creed 2 story, along with some trademark hidden blade assassinations and stealth maneuvers, this 8-bit version of the game is a must watch for any who are familiar with the series. As an added bonus, the video features a humorous twist at the end, to help keep the tone of the piece lighter than some of Assassin’s Creed’s promotional material.

Obviously this painstakingly recreated Assassin’s Creed world isn’t exactly a solely 8-bit recreation, but it does the trick just fine. Also, the video calls to mind the idea, with so many HD remakes being thrown around recently, the concept of a 16-bit or 8-bit remake.

Though the 8-bit generation is over, gamers still have shown an infinity for those types of titles, as indicated by Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game’s success, so why shouldn’t a developer pursue translating a current-gen’s mechanics into 2D space with intentionally dated graphics. The concept could go over really well in the downloadable market.

But, until a developer takes gamers up on that proposition, we are left with this fantastically realized Assassin’s Creed 8-bit world — complete with Ezio impersonation. We expect that if this first 8-bit video game parody takes off (which it already has begun to do) that its creator Majami Hiroz might consider parodying other popular video game series.
