The latest Gotham Knights trailer reveals a new Robin. Even if she’s not immediately recognizable, fans familiar with Frank Miller's seminal The Dark Knight Returns graphic novel will know the character, proving this adaptation may be a departure from what fans have come to expect.
Gotham Knights is similar in concept to Titans on HBO Max, but what makes it stand out is the timeline in which this storyline takes place. The death of Batman forces these superhero sidekicks to come together, a story that some fans may already be familiar with because of the recently released Gotham Knights video game. However, the upcoming Gotham Knights series is unrelated to the game, and thanks to the latest trailer, it is clear what separates the two. Not only is the cast of characters completely different, but the upcoming CW series will feature the first-ever live adaptation of Carrie Kelley's Robin.
The trailer opens with the soon-to-be Gotham Knights in a police station being interrogated by District Attorney Harvey Dent, played by Supernatural actor Misha Collins, for the death of what is presumed to be Batman. The cast includes many first-time comic book characters put to screen, such as Anna Lore as Stephanie Brown, a.k.a. Batgirl, Oscar Morgan as Bruce Wayne's adopted son, Fallon Smythe as Harper Row, and Navia Robinson as Carrey Kelley, the new Robin. The heroes must band together with what looks to be the Joker's daughter, not only to clear their names but to solve the mystery of Batman's death.
In The Dark Knight Returns storyline, Carrie takes it upon herself to become the new Robin and is recruited by Batman in his war on crime after she saves his life. Robinson has stated that her adaptation of Carrie Kelley will be a departure from what fans know from Frank Miller's seminal storyline in not only the race of the character but also in the suit itself. She is seen sporting a tactical suit and green goggles rather than the classic Robin cape and tights, and even the R symbol appears to be missing from the updated design.
There also seems to be Talons featured in the trailer, a group of villains popularized by Scott Snyder in his Court of Owls storyline. The same comic run also introduced Harper Row, one of the Gotham Knights. The Court of Owls was also featured as a villain in The Gotham Knights video game, and those who have read the source material or finished the game may have an idea of where this new show is going. Although, audiences will want to stay tuned for the series to see how it all plays out.
Gotham Knights will premiere on March 14th, 2023, on The CW.
