Gotham Knights has been announced now for nearly two years. In that time, WB Games Montreal has only recently started its dedicated marketing campaign following a single gameplay walkthrough and its delay, which pushed Gotham Knights to its current release date. Interestingly, a live-action CW series of the same name was announced sometime in 2021 before a pilot was eventually ordered earlier this year.

However, while both the game and the series share the title Gotham Knights, the latter has no connection whatsoever to WB Games Montreal’s game. Instead, the series centers around an eclectic cast of characters such as Bruce Wayne’s adopted son, Turner Hayes, as well as Stephanie Brown, Carrie Kelley, Harper and Cullen Row, and Duela and Harvey Dent. Since the series has had a lot of attention drawn to it lately, WB Games Montreal now clarifies its distinction.

The CW’s Gotham Knights has been in the news for some time now, but for some reason, WB Games Montreal has finally decided to speak out and clarify that its Gotham Knights is only comparable to the CW’s Gotham Knights in name alone. This was likely decided upon for a couple of reasons: WB Games Montreal may have heard the negative reception to the CW’s show and wanted to further isolate itself from that project, or it may have had a significant number of fans asking if the two shared a continuity due to their titles being identical.

Either way, it is likely an SEO nightmare for both DC properties since fans searching for one will inevitably land on the other and vice versa. Unfortunately, neither Gotham Knights project has been received exceptionally well by their respective fanbases. The CW’s Gotham Knights has been criticized for its apparent lack of budget and quality, with fans citing the CW’s Batwoman series as another example of why the CW should no longer have DC’s license for live-action shows.

Meanwhile, WB Games Montreal’s Gotham Knights has abandoned its last-gen platforms in turn for next-gen exclusivity, but fans argue that Gotham Knights’ graphics and action-RPG gameplay look underwhelming from what has been shown in its latest gameplay walkthrough. Both projects have fans concerned that their quality will not be improved by the time that either release and so it is unfortunate for both to also share the same name and negativity around them.

Of course, both the CW and WB Games Montreal may surprise devoted fans and could release to a positive reception. Only time will tell, but in the meantime, WB Games Montreal seems to want to distance itself from the CW’s Gotham Knights.

Gotham Knights releases October 25 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
