Gotham Knights will have four playable characters: Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin. It’s already been confirmed that players will be able to play through the entirety of WB Games Montreal’s upcoming title as just one of these characters as they race to take down the Court of Owls after the death of Bruce Wayne.

Each of the four available player characters in Gotham Knights will come with their own powers. However, there may be reasons to believe that Batgirl’s abilities may make her stand out above the rest when it comes to unlocking unique forms of combat and detective work in the new title.

The Knights’ Powers

Each of the Gotham Knights has their own fighting style. Red Hood focuses on guns, Nightwing focuses on acrobatics, and Robin focuses on stealth. The Knights also have unique powers. Robin, for example, is able to use the Justice League satellite for short-range teleportation. In an interview with Playstation Blog, the game’s creating director Patrick Redding described Batgirl’s combat style: “she combines a laser-focused, targeted and efficient melee fighter approach with a lot of resilience and the ability to weaponize her environment using hacking.”

Batgirl’s ability to control aspects of the environment could be one of the most unique and useful powers in the game's open world. While players have the option to play through the entirety of Gotham Knights as one character, it has been confirmed that the other Gotham Knights will level up when they aren’t being used, encouraging players to switch back and forth whenever they’d like. This is probably for the best – if some knights have extremely specific abilities like Batgirls’ hacking, being able to easily switch between them could prevent players from missing out on key aspects of the game, hidden locations and intel, and environmental weapons.

Batgirl and Villain Crimes

Players who stick to the other three knights may risk missing out on one of the most interesting ways players will be able to interact with their environment in Gotham Knights. It’s unclear for now how exactly Batgirl will weaponize her hacking skills, but it has been confirmed that she can use her computer skills to dig for information.

This could be vital to Gotham Knights' “villain crimes” like the Mr. Freeze fight shown in one of the gameplay videos. Villain crimes are a type of event in Gotham Knights which can take place over multiple nights as players put in the detective work to track down and defeat one of Gotham’s villains.

Batgirl’s ability to access information – one the character previously put to use as Batman's hacker Oracle - could make tracking down villains far more straightforward. For story-minded players and fans of the comics, Batgirl's computer hacking could also give players the opportunity to find hidden story details that the other three knights would not have access to.

Whether or not this will come with a penalty that encourages playing as the other three knights remains to be seen. In fact, one of the biggest questions that still remains about Gotham Knights is whether, despite being able to play through the game as just one knight, WB Games Montreal will make there be particular advantages to playing as certain characters during certain missions. However, for players who like finding secret rooms, unlocking hidden information, and making use of their environment in open-world games, Batgirl may be head and shoulders above the other Gotham Knights and their abilities revealed so far.

Gotham Knights will be coming in 2021, for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
