When WB Interactive first introduced Gotham Knights, the question on many fans' minds regarded how many heroes could fight together at one time and how many players could control them. Well, with a recent gameplay overview for Nightwing and Red Hood, that question has finally been fully answered to the disappointment of some fans following a recent rumor from the PlayStation Store.

News broke a few days ago about the listing for Gotham Knights on the PlayStation Store, claiming that the game would come with four-player co-op when played online. However, it would seem that WB Games Montreal never intended for this to be the amount of players able to jump into missions together, either local or online.

As has now been corrected on the PlayStation Store, Gotham Knights will come with two-player co-op when playing online, instead of the four-players that the earlier listing had shown. Additionally, the recent gameplay footage for the game includes wording that implies that two-player was always the intended way for fans to team up while online. All of this confirms that multiplayer will be limited to two-players when online and single-player when playing offline. However, this may be for the best if WB Montreal's previous comments through interviews and gameplay reveals regarding online co-op is to be taken at face value.

This two-player limit on the multiplayer remains in line with previous comments made by the developer during interviews with IGN, GamesRadar, and other media outlets. According to WB Montreal, including four-player multiplayer would require building the experience around that many characters being playing together at once. Essentially, keeping Gotham Knights' combat designed for two players instead of four implies not only tighter combat encounters, but also pushes the "dynamic duo" motif that is so popular in Batman related media.

The decision not to allow four players to join together in Gotham Knights might be disappointing to some fans who saw the four playable characters and hoped to jump into combat with all of them. However, if allowing for extra players in each encounter meant redesigning the entire game around the mechanic, the solo and two-player gameplay might have suffered as a result. For now, players should be hopeful that this limitation has allowed the developer to keep the remaining features in Gotham Knights to hold as tight and consistent as other games made around Batman media. With development focused on what is best for the game, this should lead to a better overall experience for fans.

Gotham Knights is set to release October 25th for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
